Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (58-42) improved to a season-best 16 games over .500 on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium. In their 100th game of 2021, a 3-0 blanking of the Salt Lake Bees (43-56) was Tacoma's fifth shutout victory this year. The Rainiers have won four in a row to open this homestand.

Marcus Wilson loudly busted open a scoreless game to lead off the third inning, homering off the video board for a 1-0 Tacoma lead. Luis Liberato followed with a single, setting the table for consecutive RBI doubles for Donovan Walton and Jantzen Witte to centerfield. A 3-0 Rainiers lead would conclude the day's scoring early, and be far more than the Tacoma pitching staff would require.

Southpaw Ian McKinney threw five shutout innings, and allowed only three baserunners (hit batter, walk, single). McKinney's day ended with him retiring the final eight batters he faced. The Rainiers bullpen combined to limit the Bees to only two hits over four innings; the three Salt Lake hits were all infield singles. Lefty Justus Sheffield, who remains on an MLB rehab assignment with Tacoma, worked a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts. In the ninth, Matt Festa struck out the side for the save.

The Rainiers will be in action next on Monday evening, for a 7:05 PT first pitch against the Bees at Cheney Stadium. Right-handers Logan Verrett (Tacoma) and Aaron Slegers (Salt Lake) are the scheduled starting arms.

Rainiers broadcaster Mike Curto will have full coverage on TacomaRainiers.com.
