Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Dayton pitchers Patrick McGuff and John Ghyzel combined on a three-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Lake County Captains 7-0 on Wednesday night. The game was the opener to a six-game homestand for the Dragons at Fifth Third Field. A crowd of 8,385, fifth largest of the year, was in attendance.
McGuff (2-4) was brilliant over seven scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and one walk with six strikeouts to earn the win. Ghyzel worked the last two innings, allowing one hit and one walk but no runs. The Captains had only two base runners as far as second base in the game and did not advance a man to third.
The Dragons led 3-0 before enjoying a baseball rarity in the seventh inning. The first four Dayton batters in the inning combined to hit for the cycle. Leandro Santana led off with a home run and Reshard Munroe followed with a triple. Raul Wallace singled to bring in Munroe, and Jose Garcia belted a doubled. The Dragons scored four runs in the inning to close out the scoring.
The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Munroe walked with two outs and Wallace followed with a single to right field as Munroe raced around to third. The throw from right into third base sailed out of play and Munroe scored. Wallace then came in to score on a bad hop single by Garcia to make it 2-0. The Dragons added another run in the sixth when Jonathan India walked, stole second, and scored on Andy Sugilio's triple.
The Dragons finished with 11 hits. Garcia had three hits and an RBI. Sugilio, Wallace, and Alejo Lopez each had two hits.
In the Standings: The Dragons improved to 20-31 in the second half as they snapped an eight-game losing streak. They are four games behind Fort Wayne in the Midwest League's East Division Second Half wildcard race. There are 18 games to play including 12 home games for the Dragons.
Up Next: The Dragons host the Captains at Fifth Third Field on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Jared Solomon (0-1, 6.75) will start for Dayton against Luis Oviedo (1-0, 3.00).
