Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Davenport, IA - The Quad Cities River Bandits had the tying run thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the tenth inning on Wednesday night as they fell to the Kane County Cougars 2-1 in the opening game of the series.
A scoreless tie was broken by Kane County in the top of the fifth inning. Eudy Ramos singled into center off of Luis Garcia with one out in the frame and was joined on base by Terence Connelly who worked a walk. Ryan Dobson served a soft single into center field to score Ramos and put the Cougars on top 1-0. The run snapped a 34.0 inning scoreless streak for Bandits pitching.
In the bottom of the same frame, the River Bandits evened the score. Marty Costes opened the stanza with a double and raced around to score on a one-out single from Miguelangel Sierra to tie the game 1-1.
That score held until the first extra inning. Yoel Yanqui started the frame on second base and advanced to third on a fly ball to right field from Jiancarlos Cintron. The next batter, Tim Susnara, lifted a fly ball into moderately deep center field. With Yanqui preparing to tag at third base, Costes dropped the ball and the runner scored without a throw to make it 2-1.
In the bottom half, Michael Papierski started the inning on second base. Sierra struck out against Kyler Stout for the first out of the inning. Jonathan Lacroix followed by dropping a shallow single into center field and Papierski tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Scott Schreiber struck out in the next at bat to end the game.
Garcia turned in a solid 5.0 inning performance on the mound, allowing one run on two hits with seven strikeouts. Tim Hardy followed out of the bullpen with 1.2 scoreless innings. Right-hander Brendan Feldmann worked out of a bases loaded, no out, jam in the eighth inning to compile 2.1 scoreless frames. In the tenth, Willy Collado allowed an unearned run to become saddled with the loss.
The River Bandits (29-23, 69-53) continue their series against the Kane County Cougars (27-24, 62-58) on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Cesar Rosado (4-4, 4.27) will take the ball for the Bandits and LHP Mack Lemieux (3-9, 4.12) will oppose him for the Cougars.
