McGee Goes 4-For-4 in 10-4 Series Opening Win

ZEBULON - Ashton McGee went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs, Michele Vassalotti scattered three hits and struck out five over five full innings and Jhoan Cruz earned his first save as the Mudcats defeated the Cannon Ballers 10-4 in the opener of a six game series at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis on Tuesday night.

The Mudcats (35-25) scored three times in the second and never looked back while adding on two more in the fourth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh while defeating the Cannon Ballers (19-41) 10-4. They also reached double digits in runs for the twelfth time this season after scoring 10 runs on 13 hits in Tuesday's series opener.

Vassalotti (3-3, 6.03) earned his second straight victory after working through the fifth with five strikeouts, two runs and three hits allowed. He began his outing with a four pitch first and ended up reaching 64 pitches (43 strikes) in all in his victorious start. Cruz (S, 1) followed and earned his third career save while working through four innings with four strikeouts, six hits and just one walk.

McGee's four hit night also included a walk, making him a perfect five-for-five in reaching base safely. He singled during Carolina's three run second, doubled and scored a run in the two run second, singled and scored in the sixth, walked in the seventh and doubled in the ninth.

Joey Wiemer doubled and scored Carolina's first run of the game in the second and went 1-for-5 in the game. Noah Campbell also scored twice while going 1-for-4 with a RBI triple as well. Gabe Holt and Freddy Zamora both had two hits, with Holt scoring twice.

The series will continue on Wednesday afternoon with game two at 12:00 p.m. in Kannapolis. The Mudcats lead the series 1-0.
