McCully, Offense Sharp in Nightcap Win over Biscuits

Birmingham, AL - The Barons rode the arm of Nick McCully and the timely hitting of Michael Earley, Chris Curley and Josh Richmond to an 8-5 win over the Montgomery Biscuits Monday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Barons got their first home run since opening night on a solo shot by Michael Earley in the first inning against Biscuits starter Grayson Garvin (0-1, 3.0). Garvin would allow just one other hit in 3.0 IP but was removedprior to the fourth because of a The lead would grow to 3-0 in the sixth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by Josh Richmond and Chris Curley.

Richmond and Curley would strike again an inning later with anotherpair of RBI doubles as the Barons scored five runs to increase their lead to 7-0. Curley finished 3-for-7 in the double-header with four RBI while Richmond went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI.

Trayce Thompson enjoyed his first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI in the winning effort.

The game appeared to be well in hand with an 8-0 lead entering the final frame but closer Cody Winiarski struggled with his command and surrendered five runs before being lifted in favor of Kevin Vance. He wouldretire the final two outs of the game to preserve the 8-5 lead and victory for the Barons.

McCully was the beneficiary of the offensive fireworks but came through with a stellar outing of his own, allowing just two hits and striking out three over 5.0 scoreless IP.

With the win, the Barons snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-3 on the season while Montgomery fell to 3-2.

The Barons will enjoy an off-day on Tuesday before returning to Birmingham for their home opener against the Jacksonville Suns. RHP Chris Beck (1-0, 3.60) looks for back-to-back wins to start the season as he takes the hill in game one. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
