Around the Horn: Wahoos Smack Around Smokies 3-2
April 7, 2014 - Southern League (SL1)
Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
The Wahoos' winning ways continued on Monday night as Pensacola held off a late Smokies rally to a 3-2 victory. Wearing down Tennessee starter Matt Loosen, who exited after the fifth, the first-place Wahoos smacked six early hits and held on for the win. The Smokies' bullpen set down the last ten Wahoos' batsmen, but Drew Hayes kept them in check as he picked up his third save of the young season. Here are the highlights as we go Around the Horn:
LGHTS-OUT LORENZEN: Making his first Double-A start, Michael Lorenzen dealt seven shutout innings and scattered four hits in a victorious decision. The first-round selection retired the first twelve Smokies in order while striking out six. The former outfielder also registered his first professional hit, a double to deep center field, and scored a run in the fourth inning.
LUTZ LEAVES THE YARD: Returning outfielder Donald Lutz tacked on a tally in the third inning as he belted a solo home run. Lutz moves into a tie for second on the Wahoos' all-time home run list; he has whacked thirteen in parts of three seasons with Pensacola.
PITCH PERFECT: Wahoos hurlers dominated the Smokies all series long, racking up a league-best 57 strikeouts in the opening set. The Smokies batted only .196 against Pensacola, held off the board in two games. The Wahoos' regular starting rotation finished the series with a 3-1 record and 0.71 ERA, dealing 35 strikeouts with only three walks.
STREAKING: Pensacola will take their hot bats to Huntsville after the series victory at home. Juan Silverio has knocks in four of five games, while three players have active hit streaks of three games. Travis Mattair reached base in his first three plate appearances of the night, a multi-hit effort that included two singles and one RBI.
The Blue Wahoos will take an off day tomorrow before they hit the road for a five-game series with the Huntsville Stars, the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. You can listen live on Wednesday night on the radio home of the Blue Wahoos, ESPN Pensacola. Tommy Thrall has the call on 1450 AM, 101.1 FM, and online at espnpensacola.com.
HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER
Cincinnati's top prospect Robert Stephenson kept the Smokies guessing on Saturday, striking out a personal-best eleven batters in a victorious effort.
