Biscuits Sink Barons with Four-Run Inning

Birmingham, AL - The Montgomery Biscuits rode a four-run third inning to a 4-3 win over the Birmingham Barons in game one their double-header Monday afternoon.

For the first time in 2014, the Barons failed to score first as Montgomery jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a four-run third inning. JakeHager led off the inning with a double against Barons starter Terry Doyle (0-1, 7.20) and scored on an RBI triple by Taylor Motter. Two batters later, Motter would score after successfully stealing home. Richie Shaffer capped the inning with a two-run homer to left field, giving the Biscuits a 4-0 advantage. Doyle would allow four runs on five hits over 5.0 IP on the day.

The Barons struck back with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth, getting an RBI base hit by Josh Richmond and a two-run double by Chris Curley against Biscuits' starter Mike Colla to pull within a run at 4-3.

However, the offense was unable to mount a rally over the final 3.0innings as reliever Mat Lollis (2-0. 0.00) and Santiago Garrido (S, 2) combined to hold the Barons to one hit over the final three frames.

The Barons outhit the Biscuits 8-5 as each player in the starting lineup had one hit except for OF Keenyn Walker. Second baseman Micah Johnson extended his hitting streak to four games with a first inning double.

The Barons will look to snap a three-game losing skid in game two as RHP Nick McCully makes his first start of the season for the Barons against LHP Grayson Garvin.
