
M-Braves, BayBears Split Doubleheader

PEARL, MS -- After a rainy Sunday, the Mississippi Braves and Mobile BayBears were forced to play two games Monday evening at Trustmark Park. The M-Braves took game one 4-0, and the BayBears claimed game two 2-1. Mississippi travels to Jackson for five games before returning to Trustmark Park Monday, April 14.
J.R. Graham started game one and worked five no-hit innings. He walked one and struck out three batters before exiting the game. Mobile's Mike Freeman broke up the combined no-hit bid with a two-out single in the sixth.
The M-Braves loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Seth Loman was then hit by a pitch to bring in Emerson Landoni and put the Braves out front 1-0. Kyle Kubitza reached on a force out at second, allowing Barrett Kleinknecht to score. Kubitza stole second, and David Rohm delivered a two-run single to give the M-Braves a 4-0 advantage.
Ryne Harper (1-0) worked one inning, giving up one hit and fanning two to pick up his first win of the year. Shae Simmons recorded the final three outs. Bradin Hagens (0-1) took the loss for Mobile. He gave up four runs, three earned, on two hits and a walk.
The M-Braves took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Cedric Hunter tripled and scored on a Landoni groundout to short.
Mobile tied the game at 1-1 in the second. Jon Griffin and Garrett Weber reached on back-to-back singles. Lars Davis walked to load the bases, and then Mike Freeman drew a bases-loaded, two-out walk.
The BayBears took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Weber was hit by a pitch to start the frame. A.J. Schugel singled and Freeman followed with a RBI-double to right field.
A.J. Schugel (1-0) struck out nine batters in five innings of work. He gave up one earned run on three hits and a walk. David Bromberg (0-1) worked 3.2 innings for the M-Braves in game two. He gave up two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three. Jake Barrett (S, 2) came on in the seventh to notch his second save of the season for Mobile.
The M-Braves take a day off Tuesday and travel to Jackson, TN, for a five-game series against the Generals. In game one of the series, Braves right-hander Lay Batista (0-0, 4.15) counters Generals righty Trevor Miller (0-0, 5.79). Wednesday's first pitch is slated for 7:05 PM.
