McConnell's Multi-Hit Effort Not Enough in 8-2 Loss
June 8, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
CHARLESTON, W. Va. - Charlie McConnell posted his 12th multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 night at the plate, but it was not enough to help the Power avoid an 8-2 loss to the Greenville Drive Saturday evening at Appalachian Power Park.
Greenville (27-35) struck first against Josias De Los Santos (0-4) in the second inning, as Triston Casas worked his way aboard with a leadoff single. Casas moved around to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball before scoring on Brandon Howlett's sacrifice fly.
West Virginia (30-32) answered in the third, as McConnell began the frame with a base hit to center. He then swiped second for his team-leading sixth stolen base and eventually came around to score on a laced Nick Rodriguez single to right that tied the game at one.
After De Los Santos fired a 1-2-3 third inning, the Drive pushed two more across in the fourth and three in the fifth to force an early exit from De Los Santos after four-plus innings of work. Dayeison Arias was able to stem the tide in the inning, despite allowing his inherited runner to score, striking out a pair to finish off the fifth and keep it a 6-2 deficit.
Arias extended his streak of not conceding an earned run to 18.2 innings with his scoreless frame. The South Atlantic League Midseason All-Star has not surrendered an earned run since April 23 vs. Columbia.
On the other side, Chris Machamer (2-2) held the Power to two runs over five innings of work. He struck out three and did not walk a batter over 85 pitches (58 for strikes). Jake Anchia plated the only other run for West Virginia in the fourth, stroking an RBI single to left that brought in Bobby Honeyman.
Oddanier Mosqueda, Yoan Aybar and Logan Browning combined to subdue the Power over the final four innings, striking out eight and not giving up a hit. The Drive retired 15 of the final 16 batters they faced.
West Virginia concludes its four-game series with the Greenville Drive Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park, with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m. RHP Clay Chandler (6-2, 3.18 ERA) toes the slab for the Power, while the Drive counters with RHP Brayan Bello (2-5, 8.37 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 1:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
