SUNS SNAP FOUR-GAME SKID WITH WIN OVER SHOREBIRDS: Jake Irvin dazzled in his return from the injured list, leading the Suns to a 5-1 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds at Perdue Stadium Friday. Irvin (W, 4-3) spun 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out three in the victory. The righty did not allow a hit throught 4.2 innings, and did not allow a runner to advance past first base while he was in the game. The Hagerstown (27-34) offense also struck early to give Irvin the lead. The Suns loaded the bases in the third inning against Shorebirds (45-15) starter Ofelky Peralta (L, 4-1), who then walked Israel Pineda to force in the first run. Kyle Marinconz followed that up with an RBI infield single to give Hagerstown a 2-0 lead. The Suns went right back to work in the fourth, tacking on two more runs on a two-out, two-run single from all-star Jacob Rhinesmith. Hagerstown's final run would come in to score on a Jose Sanchez RBI single in the fifth. The win for the Suns snapped a four-game losing streak, and the five runs they scored surpassed the four combined runs they scored in those four defeats.
MARVELOUS MAY: Hagerstown recorded the best ERA in Class A-Affiliate baseball in the month of May, working a 2.74 ERA across 29 games in the month. The Suns staff punched out 251 batters in 252 innings, while allowing 77 earned runs. Overall, the South Atlantic League dominated the best pitching staffs of May, holding the top-three marks, with Delmarva (3.05) and Kannapolis (3.09) holding the next two lowest spots after Hagerstown. Quad Cities and Lake County rounded out the top-five team ERAs for May. Hagerstown now holds the sixth-lowest team ERA this season in Class-A baseball, holding a 3.29 mark. Kane County paces the way with a 2.88 ERA. They've kept it going into the month of June, allowing 12 earned runs across 61 innings (1.77 ERA).
TREMENDOUS TURNER: Trey Turner was activated from Extended Spring Training May 8, since then, he has appeared in six games, spinning 10.1 innings and punching out 21 batters. Opponents are merely hitting .114 against him in the short time he's been in the South Atlantic League.
HAVE YOURSELF A DAY, DAY: Chandler Day spun two innings in Friday's win over Delmarva to keep Hagerstown in front of the Shorebirds.. Since May 6, the Vanderbilt-product has turned a new leaf. In 18.1 innings, he has allowed just nine hits while setting down 17 batters via the strikeout and allowing just two earned run. It's been good enough to drop his ERA from 5.29 to 3.15 over his last seven outings. During that span, his opponent's batting average has also dropped significantly from .314 to .252. In May, the righty made six appearances and earned a 1.80 ERA in 15 innings pitched, while holding opponents to a .142 average.
HEY NOW, YOU'RE AN ALL-STAR: Jacob Rhinesmith and Gilbert Lara will represent Hagerstown in the 60th annual South Atlantic League All-Star game. This is the first time since 2017 Hagerstown will have multiple representatives in the summer showcase. Lara holds the league's longest hitting streak this season (19 games) and Rhinesmith leads the Suns in on-base percentage (.389).
RACE FOR THE GOVERNOR'S CUP: After last night's win, the Suns have a 3-6 record against Delmarva this season. There are still 13 games remaining in the Governor's Cup series this season, including eight in Hagerstown.
