Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Mets dropped a wild pitchers' duel to the Indianapolis Indians, 1-0, on a fateful balk in the seventh inning on Wednesday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium. Both starting pitchers, Chris Mazza for Syracuse and James Marvel for Indianapolis, didn't allow a hit through the first five innings of the game.

Indianapolis (52-49) broke up Mazza's bid for a perfect game in the top of the sixth inning. Hunter Owen led off with a single to left field to start the frame. From there, a Christian Kelley walk and a sacrifice bunt gave the Indians two runners in scoring position with one out. Mazza then made a timely defensive play on the mound. The Mets starter fielded a grounder right back to him off the bat of Cole Tucker and threw out Owen at the plate, who was trying to score from third. The Mets then turned to reliever Ryan O'Rourke with two outs and runners on first and second in the sixth inning. O'Rourke induced a fly out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

Mazza went five and 2/3 innings on the mound. The 29-year-old allowed just the one hit to Owen in the sixth, walked one batter, and struck out five, while not allowing a run.

Syracuse (50-52) picked up their first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a Danny Espinosa walk, Rubén Tejada ended Marvel's no-hitter with a single to right field, moving Espinosa from first to third. From there, the Syracuse rally stalled. Marvel retired the next two batters to get out of the sixth inning without any damage.

In the top of the seventh inning, Indians third-baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes led off with a double and stole third base. Two outs later, Hayes scored the first run of the game on a balk by O'Rourke that gave Indianapolis a 1-0 lead. The Mets reliever struck out Kevin Kramer to end the inning just a couple pitches after the go-ahead balk.

The Mets and Indians pitching staffs allowed just three total hits and 21 strikeouts in the game.

Syracuse looks to bounce back Thursday night in the final game of the three-game home series against Indianapolis. First pitch from NBT Bank Stadium is set for 6:35 p.m.
