Mayhem Game Notes: Mayhem at Evansville Thunderbolts

February 23, 2018 - SPHL (SPHL)
Macon Mayhem News Release

LAST GAME PLAYED: The Mayhem came back from a 4-2 third-period deficit in their last game to defeat the Knoxville Ice Bears 5-4 last Saturday. Evansville was in Huntsville on Sunday and fell 6-1 to extend their winless streak to 11 games.

SCOUTING THE THUNDERBOLTS: Evansville started out the season hot and were near the top of the standings entering the month of January, but they have free-fallen in the standings since. Goaltender Tomas Sholl was loaned to the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL on January 24th , and the Thunderbolts have not won a game since. They went on an eight-game regulation losing streak before losing in overtime on February 16th , and they are 0-10-1 over their last 11 games. Goaltending has been a major problem over their 11-game slide, as they have allowed 5.55 goals per game during that stretch - compared to the 3.10 they have scored per game. They can still light up the scoreboard, as their offense is led by John Scorcia (43 points), Dylan Clarke (41 points) and Dave Williams (39 points).

SHAKING THINGS UP: The Mayhem made a flurry of moves to shake up their roster this week, as the regular season enters the stretch run. On Wednesday, the team traded the league's leading goal-scorer Darren McCormick and forward Paul Russell to the Fayetteville Marksmen in exchange for forward Dakota Klecha. He has 16 goals, seven assists and 23 points in 37 games between Fayetteville and Peoria this season - including eight in 10 games with the Marksmen. Klecha was a member of Peoria's second-place team last season, recording 39 points in 47 games in the regular and post-season. The team also signed forward Kevin Irwin to a three-game contract and place defenseman Jeff Sanders on the 21-Day IR. Irwin played last season for the University of Vermont and had 28 points in 71 games over his three seasons at UVM.

BACK IN ACTION: The Mayhem stay on the road tomorrow, as they make their way back to Knoxville to take on the Ice Bears on Saturday. They will also be on the road on Tuesday, as they face the Mississippi RiverKings before returning home to take on Knoxville on Thursday.
