ICYMI: Starting pitcher Tyson Miller struck out seven and held the Mudcats to just three hits over seven scoreless innings while leading the Pelicans to a 3-0 blanking of the Mudcats on Wednesday night at TicketReturn.Com Field in Myrtle Beach. The loss ran Carolina's season high losing streak to six straight games.
ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Mudcats were shutout for the first time this season after falling 3-0 in Myrtle Beach last night. Carolina is now 4-1 in shutouts this year. The loss also extended Carolina's current losing streak to a season worst six straight games. The longest losing streak in franchise history is 12 and last occurred in 2015 after the Mudcats lost 12 straight between May 15 and May 28 following the overnight team bus accident on May 12, 2015. The 1992 Mudcats also lost 12 straight games during what was the second season in team history.
VS. MYRTLE BEACH: The Mudcats and Pelicans play the finale of a three game series tonight at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The Pelicans lead the current three game series 2-0, and lead the overall season series 3-2. Tonight's game is also the sixth of 21 total meetings between the two teams this season.
MUDCATS STARTER: RHP Conor Harber has tonight's series finale start for the Mudcats in Myrtle Beach. Harber enters tonight's outing at 0-1 and has pitched to a 2.41 ERA over five games and two starts with the Mudcats this season. He is additionally 0-0 with a 2.70 as a reliever and 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA as a starter. Overall, Harber has struck out 24, walked 15 and allowed five runs on 14 hits over 18.2 innings this season. Harber last started on April 26 in game two of a doubleheader against the Pelicans and took a no-hitter through four and into the fifth. He lost the no-hit bid, and the lead, after giving up a two-out, infield single to Aramis Ademan and then a go-ahead two-run home run to Connor Myers. In all, Harber struck out five, walked four and allowed just two runs on two hits in four and 2/3 innings while suffering his first loss of the season... The Brewers selected Harber in the16th round of the 2015 draft out of the University of Oregon. He played for the Mudcats during the 2017 season and went 4-9-1 with a 5.04 ERA over 24 games and 14 starts (89.1 IP, 64 BB, 74 SO).
OPP STARTER: LHP Bryan Hudson starts for the Pelicans in tonight's series finale. He begins tonight's outing at 2-2 with a 6.16 ERA over four starts and 19.0 innings this season he has also totaled 19 strikeouts, 10 walks and a .256 average against. Hudson last pitched on April 27 in Salem and suffered his second loss of the season after allowing five runs on six hits over four innings pitched. He also struck out six and walked three his last time out... The Cubs selected Hudson in the 3rd round of the 2015 draft out of Alton High School in Alton, IL. He pitched to a 3.91 ERA and went 9-3 over 24 starts with Low-A South Bend last season (124.1 IP, 52 BB, 81 SO).
STRUGGLING LATE: Mudcats pitchers have combined to pitch to a 9.19 ERA (20 R, 16 ER, 19 BB, 14 SO) in the ninth inning so far this season. They have also pitched to a 7.00 ERA in the eighth and a 3.86 ERA in the seventh... Conversely, the Carolina pitching staff owns a 3.38 ERA from the 1st through 5th innings this season.
P.O.W.: Weston Wilson was named the Carolina League Player of the Week for the week ending on April 29. Wilson hit .412/.500/.1.059 and led the Carolina League in OPS (1.559), slugging and home runs (3) during the last week of games running from April 23 through April 29... Ryan Aguilar also won the award the week prior for the week ending on April 22.
WALK THIS WAY: The Mudcats pitching staff has combined to walk a Carolina League and Minor League Baseball high 137 batters so far this season. Carolina is also second in MiLB in BB/9 (5.63) having walked 137 over 26 games and 219.2 innings this season. Only the Great Lakes Loons (Low-A, Midwest League) have a higher BB/9 (5.67) than the Mudcats so far this season (123 BB, 195.1 IP).
HITS AND Ks: The Carolina offense has totaled 55 more strikeouts than hits (261 SO, 198 H) so far this season. Since 1991, only the 2017 Mudcats and 2007 Mudcats finished a season with more strikeouts than hits. Carolina totaled 164 more strikeouts than hits last season (1,245 SO [franchise record], 1,081 H) and 70 more strikeouts than hits in 2007 (1,219 SO, 1,149 H).
WHERE THEY RANK: Cam Roegner is currently tied for the Carolina League lead in lowest earned run average (1.35)... Trey Supak (1.78) is 5th in the CL in lowest earned run average... Marcos Diplan leads the CL in most walks (17)... Chase Williams leads the CL in most games (11) and games finished (10)... Luis Aviles Jr. is 3rd in the CL in stolen bases (11)... Tucker Neuhaus is 4th in the CL in most strikeouts (34)... Max McDowell leads CL catchers in most caught steals (17) and caught stealing efficiency (.531).
GOT HEEEM: Max McDowell leads MiLB catchers in most caught steals (17) and is 2nd in MiLB in caught stealing/stolen base efficiency (.531) for catchers with at least 20 attempts against... McDowell caught four base runners attempting to steal and picked off another at first on Opening Night, April 5 vs. Winston-Salem. He and the Mudcats also allowed six stolen bases on 4/19 vs. Buies Creek.
NO HITS, NO PROBLEM: Outfielder Rob Henry is currently 0-for-6, but owns a .533 OBP as he has walked seven times (1 R, 1 RBI, 2 SO, 1 SF, 1 HBP) in 15 plate appearances so far this season. According to SABR (since 1980) only Barry Bonds (1995) and Roberto Perez (2016) had similar starts to a season after each totaling eight walks before their first hit.
