Salem Red Sox News Release

FREDERICK, MD - The Salem Red Sox held a pair of leads early on but couldn't hang on to them, dropping an 8-3 loss to the Frederick Keys at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick.

Salem (15-12) lost for the fourth time in their last six games, despite Santiago Espinal leading off the game with a solo homer for the second time this year . The Keys (10-17) notched their 10th win of the season. From the fifth inning through the seventh, Salem ended each frame by grounding into a double play.

Salem started the scoring in the ballgame right away. Facing off against Frederick starter Brian Gonzalez (W, 1-2), Espinal jumped on a 1-0 fastball and sent it out of the yard to left for a solo homer. The dinger was his third of the year and put Salem in front 1-0.

Frederick drew level in the bottom of the second against Red Sox starting pitcher Roniel Raudes (L, 2-2). With one out, Jake Ring drew a walk and stole second base, putting himself in scoring position. Daniel Fajardo sliced a two-out single to left, allowing Ring to race home and tie the game at 1-1.

Salem crept back in front in the top of the third inning. Nick Sciortino and Carlos Tovar drew consecutive walks to lead off the inning, and Espinal eked out an infield single to load the bases with nobody out. Gonzalez fired a wild pitch that skittered by Fajardo behind the plate. Sciortino sped in to score the go-ahead run and give Salem a 2-1 advantage.

The lead wouldn't last long, though; Preston Palmeiro led off the bottom of the third with his fifth homer of the season to tie the game up. With one out, Wilson Garcia and Ring knocked consecutive singles, and Alejandro Juvier moved Garcia up to third on a fielder's choice. Raudes dealt a wild pitch of his own, and Garcia zipped home to put Frederick in front 3-2.

The Keys broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth against Salem reliever Hunter Smith, as Fajardo led off with a single and Chris Clare doubled him to third base. Cole Billingsley lined out to Brett Netzer at second, but Ryan McKenna cracked a single to left to plate the runners and extend Frederick's lead to 5-2.

Salem chipped away at the lead in the top of the eighth, with Frederick lefty Elvis Araujo on the bump. With two outs, Tyler Hill bashed a double to center, and Kyri Washington followed suit with one to left, scoring Hill and trimming the lead to 5-3.

The Keys added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth. Clare led off with a single and headed to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cole Billingsley. McKenna drew a walk, and Palmeiro singled to plate Clare before Jomar Reyes brought both McKenna and Palmeiro in on a base hit, giving the Keys their final 8-3 lead.

Raudes gave up three runs on six hits and three walks while fanning three in 3.1 innings. Smith allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk in a career-high 4.2 innings of relief.

The Sox will try to right the ship Friday night against the Potomac Nationals, with righty Jake Thompson taking the ball for Salem against Potomac right-hander Joan Baez. The Sox will be making history, as Suzie Cool joins Ben Gellman on the broadcast to become the first female broadcaster inn First pitch from Pfitzner Stadium is at 7:05 a.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
