Rocks Drop Series Finale against P-Nats

May 3, 2018 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Woodbridge, VA- After the offense put on a clinic in the middle game of the series, the Wilmington Blue Rocks (12-14) were unable to duplicate the offensive explosion in the series finale and fell to the Potomac Nationals (16-11) 12-2 Thursday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Wilmington was held to five hits with Kort Peterson picking up three of the hits in his first game batting leadoff this season.

Potomac started the scoring barrage in the opening inning against Wilmington's starter Cristian Castillo. Juan Soto clubbed a three-run home run to highlight a four-run frame for the P-Nats. The Blue Rocks scored a run in the third inning on an RBI groundout from Gabriel Cancel to score Angelo Castellano, who reached on a one-out double, and moved to third on one of Peterson's three hits to make it 4-1. That would be the closest the Rocks would be able to get.

A pair of RBI doubles from Jake Noll and Ian Sagdal scored three runs in Potomac's half of the third inning to make it a 7-1 deficit for the Blue Rocks. In the fourth inning, big-league rehabber Anthony Rendon laced an RBI single and Soto drove in another run on a groundout to widen the gap, 9-1. Wilmington scored its last run of the game in the fifth inning on a bases loaded RBI walk from Khalil Lee to make it a 9-2 contest. Telmito Agustin hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning and Soto smacked his second homer of the game in the eighth inning to give the game its final score, 12-2.

The Blue Rocks being a six-game homestand on Friday, May 4 when they welcome the Frederick Keys to Frawley Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with righty Jace Vines (1-4, 8.06 ERA) making the start for Wilmington while right-hander Ofelky Peralta (1-2, 3.63 ERA) starts for Frederick. Fans can listen to the game as Matt Janus and Cory Nidoh will have the call on 89.7 WGLS-FM.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Kort Peterson batted leadoff for the first time this season and was a productive catalyst atop the lineup Thursday night. The outfielder went 3-for-4 to bump his batting average up to .260. It was the fifth multi-hit game of the season for Peterson and his second, three-hit game of the campaign. The strong performance at the plate helped snap a 2-for-17 cold spell at the plate for the 24-year-old. Peterson's last multi-hit game was back on April 21 at Frederick when he picked up his first-career multi-homer game and drove in five runs.

Khalil Lee drove in his 15th RBI of the season with a bases loaded walk and has now driven in at least one run in three straight games and nine runs over his last ten games.  The 19-year-old has also picked up a hit in his last three games and is 5-for-his-last-12 after going 2-for-23 his previous seven games. Lee is third on the team in RBI and also second on the team in walks with 20.

Although it's early May, the Blue Rocks have an important homestand coming up on Friday with six games against Northern Division foes. The Blue Crew will welcome the Frederick Keys, who are 10-17 and in last place in the Northern Division, to the Riverfront for the first time in 2018 before wrapping up the backend of the homestand with Potomac, who currently is sitting atop the division and have taken five of the last seven from the Blue Crew.
