Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Former Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp right-handed pitcher Max Meyer is set to make his MLB debut Saturday for the Miami Marlins against the Philadelphia Phillies at Marlins Park.
A first-round pick (third overall) by Miami in 2020 out of the University of Minnesota, Meyer logged time with Jacksonville in 2021 and 2022. In his two years with the Jumbo Shrimp, Meyer made 14 starts, going 3-5 while allowing 25 earned runs in 68 total innings for a 3.31 ERA. He struck out 82 batters against just 25 walks and 45 hits.
Currently rated by MLB Pipeline as the No. 21 prospect in baseball and No. 2 prospect in the Marlins' system, Meyer spent three seasons at the University of Minnesota, making 46 appearances and 15 starts. In 148.0 innings, Meyer tallied a 2.07 ERA and saved 18 games for the Golden Gophers. When Meyer was drafted third overall by the Marlins in 2020, he tied Hall of Famer Paul Molitor as the highest MLB draft pick in program history, while also being the second-highest pick in Big Ten history.
In addition to Meyer, former Jumbo Shrimp infielder Joe Dunand (May 7, Miami Marlins), right-handers Chad Smith (May 29, Colorado Rockies), Jason Alexander (June 1, Milwaukee Brewers), Aneurys Zabala (June 12, Miami Marlins) and outfielder Jerar Encarnacion (June 19, Miami Marlins) have also made their major league debuts so far during the 2022 season. Meyer is the 946th player to don both a Jacksonville uniform and play in the major leagues. The history of Minor League Baseball in Jacksonville dates back to 1904.
