July 21, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
Jake Shaffer fell a single shy of the cycle and Andrew Carraway turned in another good start, as the Mavs scored a rare win in Modesto with a 7-4 victory Wednesday night.
Shaffer went 3-for-4, collecting all extra-base hits. He knocked a solo homer in the second, an RBI double in the fifth, and an RBI triple in the seventh. All of his hits came with two outs, and he grounded out to second in the ninth in his final at-bat.
Carraway (7-5) tossed a third straight quality start, holding the Nuts to two runs in six innings. He allowed seven hits, struck out four, and walked none.
A throwing error by Modesto's Joe Sanders in the first inning opened the door for two runs in the first. Eddy Martinez-Esteve hit an RBI single, and Rich Poythress followed with a sac fly to give the Mavs the early edge.
Shaffer's homer followed in the second to make it 3-0. It was his first home run since he hit two in a game at home on May 26, also against Modesto.
Mike Zuanich got the Nuts on the board in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to make it 3-1.
Shaffer's RBI double pushed the lead back to three runs, and Dennis Raben hit a solo homer in the fifth to put the Mavs up 5-1.
David Christensen answered with a homer in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 5-2.
Shaffer sent an RBI triple off the wall in center field in the sixth, and Rich Poythress sent a solo homer to left in the eighth to finish the scoring.
The Nuts fought hard in the ninth, scoring twice and bringing the tying run to the plate. With one out, four straight men reached base, including a RBI single by Erik Wetzel.
Tim Wheeler sent a sac fly to left, making it 7-4. Stephen Penney regrouped and struck out Thomas Field to end the game.
Nuts pitcher Juan Nicasio took his third straight loss, allowing five runs over five innings--his shortest outing since May 23. Nicasio (8-7) gave up seven hits, including two home runs. He had allowed one home run at home prior to Wednesday.
The Mavs will look to win a series against Modesto for the first time since 2006 when they face the Nuts at 7:05 p.m. Thursday. Live coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960.
