July 21, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes started their three-game home stand by earning their league-leading eighth shutout of the year, defeating the Bakersfield Blaze on Tuesday night by a score of 6-0 at The Epicenter.
Ryan Chaffee, Steven Geltz and Eddie McKiernan combined to limit the Blaze to just six hits, while Jon Townsend enjoyed his best night since coming off the DL, blasting a three-run homer and finishing with a season-high four RBIs.
Chaffee and Bakersfield starter Carlos Pimentel were engaged in a good match-up, as both clubs were scoreless through four innings.
Pimentel (6-5) walked Ikki Sumi to lead off the fifth. After Kevin Ramos was hit by a pitch, Mike Trout moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Rian Kiniry delivered a sac fly to deep center, scoring Sumi and putting the Quakes up 1-0.
Townsend and Sumi had back-to-back two-out, run-scoring hits in the sixth, as the Quakes took a 3-0 lead.
Chaffee (4-4) scattered four hits, two walks and three hit batters over six innings, turning it over to Geltz in the seventh. Geltz kept the Blaze off the board for the next two innings, then watched Townsend put it out of reach in the eighth.
With Dillon Baird and Angel Castillo aboard, Townsend took Hector Nelo out to left for his fourth homer of the year, giving the Quakes a commanding 6-0 advantage.
McKiernan worked the ninth, even in the non-save situation, retiring three of the four hitters he faced to end it.
The Quakes (15-11, 54-42) now hold a two game advantage over both High Desert and Lake Elsinore in the South Division. Manaurys Correa (1-7) makes his first start since rejoining the Quakes from the Midwest League, as he takes the ball tomorrow morning. Bakersfield will send Kennil Gomez (3-7) to the mound, with first pitch at 10:35am on Wednesday morning.
Tickets for tomorrow's early game can be purchased by calling (909) 481-5000 or anytime online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter...Go Quakes!
