Mavericks Let Second Straight Slip Away Happen

July 21, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

After not having trouble holding on to late leads for a good two months of the season, the Mavs let a second straight slip away on the road Tuesday night, falling 5-3 in Modesto.

With the Mavs leading 3-2 heading into the eighth, the Nuts got a one-out double by Joe Sanders. Wes Littleton (0-1) then entered the game to try and record the final five outs. He proceeded to hit Jimmy Cesario on an 0-2 pitch to put the go-ahead run on base.

Eric Wetzel then sent a ground ball up the middle that hit Edilio Colina's chest and went into center field. As the tying run crossed the plate, Denny Almonte fired an errant throw to third, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

David Christensen followed with an RBI single to give the Nuts some insurance and put them up 5-3.

It was an extra run Modesto didn't need, as Casey Weathers retired the Mavericks in order to earn his first save since joining Modesto.

Although the Mavs controlled most of the game, the Nuts scored first, plating one run in second. With two outs, Cesario doubled and Wetzel followed with a single.

Those two did most of the damage for the Nuts, combining to go 6- for-6. Wetzel drove in three runs, and Cesario scored three times.

The Mavs tied the game in the third on a two-out RBI single by Rich Poythress.

They seized the lead in the fourth. Shaver Hansen put the Mavs ahead with an RBI triple, and two batters later, Colina singled to score Hansen and make it 3-1.

The Nuts would score once in the sixth to pull within one, but Jake Wild kept the tying run at third and kept the Mavs in the lead.

The Mavs had plenty of chances to put more runs on the board, but struggled with men in scoring position, going 3-for-13 and leaving 12 men on base. They faded at the plate down the stretch, as Alan DeRatt (1-0) and Weather combined to retire the last eight hitters of the game.

The loss also marred a good effort by Kenn Kasparek, who pitched for the first time in about a month after being activated off the disabled list. Working on a limited pitch count, Kasparek allowed one run over five innings with four hits and three strikeouts.

The Mavs have now dropped four of their last five road games and will look to score a win Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. against Modesto. Live coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
