Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Bakersfield Blaze popped three homers on Wednesday afternoon, taking an 8-4 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at The Epicenter.
Johnathan Greene enjoyed a career-day, with three hits, including two homers and five RBIs.
His three-run homer in the ninth inning off of Quakes' closer EddieMcKiernan broke open a close game and put the Blaze comfortably in front.
Bakersfield starter Kennil Gomez dominated the Quakes for a second straight start, firing seven innings of shut-out baseball.
Quakes' starter Manaurys Correa, returning from the Midwest League, pitched well in his first start since rejoining the Quakes. Correa made a couple of mistakes though, giving up a solo homer to David Paisano two pitches into the game, then allowing a two-run shot to Greene in the sixth, as the Blaze took a 3-0 lead.
Correa (1-8) allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings, suffering the loss.
The Blaze extended their advantage to 5-0 in the eighth, as Andres James knocked in a run with an RBI groundout and Paisano drove home another with an RBI single off Quakes' reliever Kyle Hurst.
Gomez (4-7) was removed after seven scoreless innings and it didn't take the Quakes any time at all to jump on the Blaze bullpen. Alberto Rosario doubled home Rian Kiniry and Mike Trout to put the Quakes on the board at 5-2. Three batters later, Luis Jimenez doubled home Rosario to make it 5-3, chasing Blaze reliever Corey Young. Closer Mark Hamburger was called out of the bullpen to replace Young and immediately gave up a run-scoring hit to Clay Fuller, as the Quakes closed to within a run at 5-4. Jon Townsend grounded out to end the rally though, as the Quakes left the tying run on base.
The Blaze used an error to their advantage in the ninth, as Greene took McKiernan deep for his second homer of the day, a three-run shot to up the Bakersfield lead to 8-4.
The Quakes got a one-out single from Kiniry in the ninth, but couldn't get anything else going against Hamburger, who earned his 14th save of the year.
Rancho Cucamonga (15-12, 54-43) now hold a 1 ½ game lead in the South Division. The Quakes and the Blaze face off on Thursday night in the final game of the three-game home stand.
