San Jose Giants News Release

The Stockton Ports handed San Jose a fifth consecutive home defeat with an 8-6 victory over the Giants in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. Stockton knocked out 13 hits and overcame a four-RBI performance from Francisco Peguero to snap San Jose's three-game winning streak. The loss drops the Giants' overall record to 55-41.

Peguero (3-for-5, HR, 4 RBI, SB) smacked his fifth home run of the season to lead a 12-hit San Jose offensive attack. Johnny Monell (2-for-5, RBI), Wendell Fairley (2-for-5) and Jose Flores (2-for-3, 2B, SB) also contributed two hits apiece.

Trailing by a 2-1 margin, the Giants mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning against Stockton starter Justin Murray. After the two batters of the frame had been retired, Flores singled before James Simmons doubled to deep left putting runners on second and third. Peguero followed with a fly ball that carried over the fence in left center field for a three-run homer and a 4-2 San Jose lead.

Stockton though immediately answered with two runs of their own in the top of the third against Oliver Odle. Stephen Parker led off with a single before Mike Spina was hit by a pitch and Yusuf Carter walked to load the bases. Odle recovered to strikeout Jeremy Barfield, but Tyler Ladendorf delivered an RBI single before Todd Johnson's sacrifice fly tied the game at 4-4.

The Ports then took the lead for good in the top of the fourth as Jermaine Mitchell led off with a double, advanced to third on Grant Green's groundout and scored on Parker's sacrifice fly to left.

Odle (10-4) suffered the loss for the Giants after surrendering five runs (all earned) on eight hits over five innings of work. The right-hander walked one and struck out six.

San Jose had a golden opportunity to tie the game or take the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but stranded the bases loaded. Three consecutive one-out singles from Monell, Charlie Culberson and Fairley put three runners on base, but Stockton reliever Lance Sewell induced Drew Biery to pop out on a 3-1 pitch before Flores also popped out ending the threat.

Ben Wilshire (2 1/3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) relieved Odle to begin the top of the sixth and fired two perfect innings of relief before running into trouble in the eighth. Carter led off with a single before he was erased on Barfield's fielder's choice groundout. After a wild pitch advanced Barfield to second, Ladendorf singled to put runners on the corners. Johnson then stepped to the plate and grounded a triple into the right field corner to plate both runners for a 7-4 Ports advantage. Ryan Ortiz was up next and he capped the Stockton scoring for the night with an RBI single.

The Giants cut the Ports lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Flores started the rally with a one-out double before Simmons reached on an error. Peguero followed with a single into right field to plate Flores while Simmons eventually scored on a balk to make it 8-6. However with the potential tying run at the plate, Stockton's Brett Hunter struck out Ehire Adrianza and retired Juan Perez on fly out to left ending the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Trey Barham worked around a two-out single from Fairley to record his first save of the year. Barham retired Biery on a groundout to shortstop to finish the game.

Sewell (7-0) notched the win out of the bullpen to maintain his perfect record this season. The left-hander tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings with two hits allowed, no walks and two strikeouts.

Ladendorf (3-for-4, 2B, RBI) knocked out three hits while Johnson (1-for-3, 3B, 3 RBI) collected three RBI's to lead the Ports offensively.

Notes: San Jose is 2-9 at home since the All-Star break ... Odle has allowed five runs in three consecutive starts ... Peguero also stole his team-leading 34th base of the year ... Sewell had retired 26 consecutive hitters over four relief appearances before allowing a fifth-inning single to Fairley - the first batter he faced after replacing Murray ... Stockton was 8-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

On Deck: The Giants and Ports continue their three-game series on Wednesday evening with first pitch at Municipal Stadium scheduled for 7:00 PM. Kyle Woodruff (1-0, 2.65 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Stockton is expected to counter with former major leaguer Brett Tomko (0-0, 7.56 ERA).
