Mavs win 9-3 in Modesto

August 4, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

Jimmy Gillheeney turned in a strong debut on the mound, and the Mavs had a stellar night at the plate, winning 9-3 in Modesto Tuesday night.

Recently called up from Clinton to take Anthony Vasquez's spot in the rotation, Gillheeney filled Vasquez's shoes and then some in his debut. He allowed just one unearned run over six innings, giving up just two hits. Gillheeney (1-0) walked one and tied a career high with eight strikeouts.

Even though Gillheeney didn't need all the runs, the Mavs had a great night at the plate, scoring nine runs on 16 hits.

They got it going in the third, scoring three times with two outs. Johermyn Chavez lined a two-run double to open the scoring, extending his hit streak to 23 games.

Rich Poythress then followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Nuts got their only run against Gillheeney in the fourth. With a runner at third and two out, Thomas Field sent a sharp grounder to third Shaver Hansen could not handle, allowing a run to cross.

The Mavs answered the next inning, getting back-to-back RBI doubles by Chavez and Poythress.

Kyle Seager and Edilio Colina each brought home runs on consecutive singles in the sixth to make it a 7-1 lead. Jake Shaffer hit a homer the next inning to bring the lead to seven runs.

The Nuts managed to score twice in the bottom of the seventh without collecting a hit. Ryan Moorer walked the first three batters of the inning, and runs scored on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.

The Mavs tallied their final run of the night in the ninth on an RBI single by Denny Almonte. Seven Mavericks, including Almonte, collected at least two hits. They went 8-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

The Nuts, on the other hand, just couldn't come up with clutch hits, going 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Modesto starting pitcher Dan Houston wasn't as effective as he was two weeks ago against the Mavs when he struck out 10 over seven strong innings. Houston (5-7) was roughed up for seven runs and 11 hits over five-plus innings Tuesday. He only struck out two with no walks.

The Mavs will look to win a fourths straight game at John Thurman Field when they face the Nuts at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. Live coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
