Giants Rally To 5-4 Win Over Stockton

August 4, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

The San Jose Giants overcame an early four-run deficit, scoring twice in the seventh to tie the game before taking the lead with a single tally in the eighth en route to a 5-4 victory over the Stockton Ports on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. Charlie Culberson scored the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice as San Jose claimed the opener of the three-game series. The win improves the Giants' overall record to 60-48.

Eric Stolp (6-8) was credited with the victory out of the San Jose bullpen after tossing two scoreless innings. Stolp, who entered the game to start the top of the seventh, yielded just one hit with one strikeout during his stint on the mound. Jason Stoffel then struck out the side in a perfect top of the ninth to pick-up his 19th save of the year.

The Giants trailed by a 4-0 score until beginning their comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning. Francisco Peguero started the frame by reaching on a fielding error committed by shortstop Grant Green before Michael Sandoval singled. A passed ball advanced the runners up to second and third and then after Johnny Monell struck out, Culberson delivered a sacrifice fly to right plating Peguero. Drew Biery was up next and he lined a two-out single up the middle to score Sandoval bringing San Jose to within 4-2.

The Giants put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but Ports starter Fabian Williamson pitched out of trouble inducing Juan Perez to line out to left before Peguero grounded out. Williamson then worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth before handing the game over to the Stockton bullpen.

In the bottom of the seventh, Biery started the two-run rally by getting hit by a pitch. Ports reliever Scott Deal then allowed a single to Ehire Adrianza prompting another pitching change as Trey Barham was summoned from the bullpen. Wendell Fairley greeted Barham with a sacrifice bunt as the runners advanced to second and third before James Simmons drew a walk to load the bases. Stockton then brought in their third pitcher of the inning as Jose Pina entered the contest. Perez was up next and he plated Biery with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3 while a Pina wild pitch scored Adrianza with the tying run.

San Jose took their first lead of the evening with a single run in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Culberson reached on an infield single to third base and advanced all the way to third on the play when Stephen Parker's throw bounced down the right field line for an error. Biery followed with a groundball to second as Culberson raced home. Ports second baseman Tyler Ladendorf threw the ball home, but Culberson slid and avoided the tag from catcher Yusuf Carter to give the Giants a 5-4 lead.

Stoffel then struck out David Thomas, Kent Walton and Jermaine Mitchell in the ninth to seal the victory.

Adrianza (2-for-3, SB) was the only San Jose starter to finish with a multi-hit game. The Giants won despite being out-hit by a 12-6 margin. All six of San Jose's hits were singles.

Stockton initially took a 4-0 lead with two runs each in the second and fourth innings against Giants starter Kyle Nicholson. In the top of the second, Parker led off with a single before Mike Spina clubbed a double to deep left center. Parker scored when the next batter, Carter, grounded out while Spina came home on Todd Johnson's one-out single into right.

Spina extended the Ports lead to 3-0 with a leadoff home run in the fourth. Carter followed with a single, advanced to third on Nicholson's wild pick-off throw and scored on Thomas' one-out bloop single down the right field line.

Nicholson worked the first six innings for the Giants and surrendered four runs (three earned) on 11 hits. The right-hander struck out four and walked none.

Pina (1-3) suffered the loss out of the Stockton bullpen after allowing one unearned run on one hit over 1 2/3 innings. Williamson limited the Giants to four hits and two unearned runs over his six innings of work. The Ports starter struck out six and walked none.
