Mavs suffer 4-3 loss in Modesto

August 4, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

One night after a great showing at the plate, the Mavs experienced the opposite on offense as they were limited to a season-low three hits in a 4-3 loss in Modesto Wednesday night.

The Mavs didn't collect a hit until the fifth and all three hits were singles over the fifth and sixth. Although they caught several breaks, they couldn't take advantage and come through with runs.

One of those situations came in the first. Modesto committed errors on the first two plays of the game, putting runners at second and third. However, they would only get one run out of the inning on a fielder's choice by Rich Poythress.

Modesto rallied in the bottom of the second after there were none on with two outs. The next five men all reached base, with runs scoring on an RBI double by Ryan Peisel and a an RBI single by Scott Robinson.

With a runner at second and one out in the bottom of the fourth, Eric Wetzel lined single to left field. Maximo Mendez misplayed the ball, allowing the runner to score and put the Nuts up 3-1.

After being held hitless through four innings, the Mavs were able to break through in the fifth. Shaver Hansen led off with a single, and two batters later, Mendez singled to put runners at the corners. Kyle Seager then hit a sac fly to pull the Mavs within one.

The Nuts responded in the bottom of the inning, getting a two-out RBI single by Ben Paulsen to go ahead 4-2.

In the seventh, Mendez drew a one out walk. He stole second base and went to third on a throwing error. Seager then sent another sac fly to left to get the Mavs back within one.

Later in the inning, Edilio Colina drew a walk and went to second on an errant pickoff throw, but Johermyn Chavez flied out to center to end the inning. Chavez finished 0-for-4, as his 23-game hit streak came to a close.

The Mavs never put the tying run in scoring position over the final two innings. Adam Jorgensen worked around a two-out walk to convert his 24th save of the season.

Parker Frazier (1-0) kept the Mavs off-balance all to start the game, tossing six strong innings. He allowed two runs--one earned-- and just three hits. Frazier struck out seven and walked only one.

Maikel Cleto continued to have trouble with two outs, allowing three of his four runs to score with two down. Cleto (3-5) allowed a season-high 10 hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

The Mavs will now play a rubber match in a sixth straight series Thursday night when they face the Nuts at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage will start on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com at 6:45 p.m.
