JetHawks Use Two Big Innings for 9-8 Road Win

August 4, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(SAN BERNARDINO, CA) - Both teams got big hits, but Lancaster used a three-run frame in the seventh inning to push past the Inland Empire 66ers Tuesday night in the first game of a three-game series. The win clinches the season series between the two teams in the JetHawks favor, despite the fact that there are five games left between the clubs. Lancaster has won 12 of the 18 meetings between the teams so far.

Strong pitching and missed opportunities by both teams get the game scoreless until the bats broke out in the fifth inning. Lancaster erupted with nine hits, their most of any inning this season. Four of the first five batters singled. Brandon Barnes then doubled, Lee Cruz tripled, and Brian Pellegrini doubled, each bringing home a run. Federico Hernandez added an RBI single as the JetHawks brought six runs across the plate.

Inland Empire needed just two innings to tie the score, scoring four times in the fifth inning against Lancaster starter Robert Donovan and twice in the sixth against Brian Wabick, who celebrated his 23rd birthday.

Undaunted by the lost lead, the JetHawks bounced back in the seventh inning. Brandon Barnes hit the first pitch of the inning for his 21st home run of the season, putting the JetHawks back in the lead. A Cruz single, an error, two wild pitches, and a base hit from Andy Simunic made the total three runs scored in the inning as Lancaster led 9-6.

The home run from Barnes was his 33rd as a JetHawk, leaving him just one home run away from catching up to Peanut Williams for 5th amongst the all-time Lancaster home run leaders.

After Jose Trinidad hurled two perfect innings of relief, he walked two batters to start the ninth inning. Closer David Berner entered and allowed both runners to score before wrapping up his eleventh save of the season.

The JetHawks will seek their third straight win when they battle the 66ers Wednesday night in San Bernardino. Kyle Greenwalt (4-6) will pitch for Lancaster against Ethan Martin (9-9) of Inland Empire. The game begins at 7:05 and will be broadcast live online at JetHawks.com/CSN and on radio at NewsTalk 1380. The Pre-Game Show begins at 7:00.
