Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(SAN BERNARDINO, CA) - While the defense was shaky for both teams Wednesday night, the JetHawks got great pitching and the 66ers did not. That was the difference, allowing time for Lancaster's offense to erupt late for an 11-3 win on the road at Inland Empire. The JetHawks have won three straight games overall and each of their last five games against the 66ers. The win sets up a chance to sweep the 66ers for a third time in 2010.
Lancaster took the lead on the second pitch of the game and never trailed. Jay Austin hit a fastball over the right field wall for his eighth home run and the team was off and running. The next batter, Jonathan Villar, walked and stole second base before scoring on a RBI double by Lee Cruz. The hit from Cruz extended his hit streak to 18 straight games.
While the JetHawks scored four runs over the first four innings, starter Kyle Greenwalt took a no-hitter into the fifth. The 66ers battled back into the game with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, but Brian Wabick and Mike Modica came out of the bullpen for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Sixers from tying the game.
That gave the offense enough time to resume control. Andy Simunic hit a two-run bases-loaded single in the seventh inning, followed by a run-scoring double Mark Ori to give the JetHawks some breathing room. A single by David Flores brought home Austin in the eighth, which preceded a two-run homer by Brian Pellegrini as the JetHawks turned the game into a rout.
All ten offensive players that got into the game for the JetHawks reached base safely at least once. Austin stole two more bases, sending his league-leading total to 47.
The JetHawks will try to sweep the 66ers for a third time this season when they finish the series in San Bernardino Thursday night. Patrick Urckfitz (4-7) will pitch for Lancaster against Josh Walter (1-6) of Inland Empire. The game begins at 7:05 and will be broadcast live online at JetHawks.com/CSN and on radio at NewsTalk 1380. The Pre-Game Show begins at 7:00.
