Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks defeated the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, 4-3, in a shootout Tuesday night at Independence Events Center. Mavericks' forward Bill Vandermeer had a pair of goals including the shootout winner and goaltender Alexandre Vincent stopped 27 of 30 shots and three of four in the shootout for his sixth win of the season. Missouri is now 15-15-2 on the season and reached the.500 mark for the first time, and the team is exactly halfway through the season at 32 games played. The Mavericks will host the Arizona Sundogs for a pair of games this weekend at Independence Events Center and tickets are still available. Go to MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
"I am proud of our guys for playing in their third straight game with a short bench," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "To get two points no matter who we play is big for us right now."
Missouri dominated the first half of the opening period. The Mavericks reeled off 13 shots and took a 1-0 lead before Bossier-Shreveport tallied a single shot. At the 9:44 mark, Nick Sirota made a nice no-look backhand pass from behind the Mudbugs' net to a wide open Brett Hammond who one-timed it into the net. The goal for Hammond marked his sixth of the season and Mavericks' forward Simon Watson earned the second assist.
At the 10:10 mark of the first, the Mudbugs finally earned a shot on goal, and before the period ended Mark Johnson tied the game when he lifted a shot over the shoulder of Vincent. Missouri finished with 15 shots in the period to the Mudbugs' eight.
Brett Smith put the visitors up 2-1 just 4:22 into the second period when he banged home a rebound off a shot by Justin Aikins. The power play goal was also assisted by David Pszenyczny, but the Mavericks quickly answered the Smith goal when Chad Hinz slipped a rebound past Mudbugs' goaltender Ken Carroll at the 6:47 mark. The game remained tied 2-2 heading into the third period and Missouri held a 28-18 edge in shots through two periods.
The Mudbugs took a 3-2 lead at the 13:13 mark of the third period when David Rutherford scored a highlight reel power-play goal. Rutherford had the puck behind the Mavericks' net and cradled it around the net lifting the puck into the far top corner. Again the Mavericks answered just 18 seconds later on Vandermeer's game winner. He beat Carroll off a pass from Jeff Christian to tie the game at three goals apiece.
Neither team was able to score in the overtime period, and Missouri saved the heroics for the shootout. Hinz, Vandermeer and Tommy Lange all scored goals in the shootout for Missouri and only Joe Blaznek was able to beat Mavs' goaltender Vincent in four tries for the Mudbugs.
Missouri finished 1-4 on the power play and killed three of five Mudbug's chances. Missouri outshot Bossier-Shreveport 38-30 marking the fourth straight game in which the Mavericks have put up more than 30 shots on net.
The Mavericks will host the Arizona Sundogs for a pair of games this weekend on January 8 and 9. Friday, January 8 is "Halfway to Independence Day" in which the Mavericks will wear specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game.
