Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Missouri Mavericks outscored the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 3-1 in the shootout Tuesday night at the Independence Events Center, earning a second straight win over the Mudbugs by a score of 4-3. Two times the 'Bugs held the lead in the game, but couldn't hang on a fell to 17-12-2 for the season. Alexandre Vincent stopped three of four Mudbugs in the shootout to earn his sixth win of the year.
David Rutherford put Bossier-Shreveport on top 3-2 with an incredible goal in the third period, laying the puck flat on his stick blade and tucking it into the top corner from behind the net. The lead only lasted 18 seconds though, as Bill Vandermeer tied the game immediately after. Ken Carroll made 34 saves, but lost his first shootout of the season after starting 3-0.
Missouri's Brett Hammond opened the scoring on the powerplay in the first period; one-timing a centering feed past Carroll at 9:44 to put the Mavericks ahead. The 'Bugs tied it with 1:25 remaining in the period as Alexandre Vincent stopped Joe Blaznek's rocket from the wing, but couldn't prevent Mark Johnson from knocking in the rebound to make it a 1-1 game after 20 minutes.
Bossier-Shreveport went on top in the second period as Brett Smith parked himself just outside the crease on the powerplay, first deflecting a point shot on goal and then sliding the rebound past Vincent at 4:22. Missouri answered just over two minutes later however as Chad Hinz jammed a rebound under a prone Carroll to once again tie the game at two heading into the third.
Rutherford's amazing goal came at 13:13 during a Mudbugs powerplay. With time behind the Missouri net, Rutherford set the puck flat on his horizontal stick blade and wrapped his stick around the post, putting the puck in behind an oblivious Vincent. The Mavs tied again though in just 18 seconds a Vandermeer one-timed a Jeff Christian pass into the net to send the game into overtime.
The Mavericks scored three times in the shootout with Vandermeer getting the winner as only Joe Blaznek tallied for the 'Bugs. Vincent made 27 saves in the victory for Missouri, who outshot Bossier-Shreveport 38-30. The Mudbugs scored twice in five powerplay chances while the Mavs were 1 for 4.
The Mudbugs will now continue their road swing, making their second trip to South Dakota to take on the Rapid City Rush on Friday and Saturday. Both games will start at 8:05 pm Central time with pregame coverage starting at 7:45 pm on AM 1130 KWKH Friday night and News Radio 710 KEEL on Saturday night. The games will also be shown live online on CHL TV.
