Odessa's Joel Martin Wins Weekly Award

(Tempe, Arizona) - The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today that goaltender Joel Martin of the Odessa Jackalopes has been voted the winner of the CHL Performance of the Week for the week of December 21-27. Martin wins the award for his 44-save performance in the Jacks 5-1 home win versus Allen on December 22. The game was a showdown of the two top teams in the Southern Conference.

Martin's win marked the 12th straight game that the netminder earned at least a point for his team (11-0-1 over that stretch). On the season, Martin is 13-2-2 with a league-leading 2.21 goals against average and a.924 save percentage (second in the CHL). The starting goaltender for the CHL All-Star Team also leads the league with six shootout wins.

In a very tight race between three candidates, Martin received 35% of the vote (502 votes) while Odessa's Dominic Leveille's 300th point (403 votes) and Miguel Beaudry's win in Colorado (400 votes) were separated by just three votes for second and third place respectively. In all, 1,451 votes were cast during the weekly poll.

The nominees for the CHL Performance of the Week for week 12 of the season for the period beginning on December 28 and ending on January 3 are as follows:

-Missouri holding Bossier-Shreveport to just five shots on goal in the final two period of a 5-3 win on January 2

-Amarillo's David Nimmo scoring two third period goals in Gorillas comeback won at Odessa on January 1

-Allen's Charlie Effinger making 33 saves in 3-0 shutout in Wichita on December 31

-Tulsa's Marty Magers stopping league season-high 54 shots in 2-1 shootout win at RGV on December 29

-Rapid City's Scott Wray burning former team with two goals (including SO game winner) in 6-5 win at Amarillo on December 31

Fans can vote for the winner until Monday, January 11 with the winner being announced on Tuesday, January 12.
