
Mavs Outlast Gems, 2-1

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks and Dayton Gems faced off for the third time in three nights, Saturday night at Independence Events Center. The Gems had won the previous two contests on Thursday in Dayton and Friday in Independence. The Mavs snapped a four-game home losing streak, skating to a 2-1 victory over the Gems. John-Scott Dickson scored two goals and recently acquired goaltender, Brian Mahoney-Wilson made 27 saves for Missouri. With the win, the Mavs now sit just one point back of first place.
Dayton got the scoring started in the second half of the first period on a goal from Matthew Larke. Assisting on the goal were Tim Hartung and Chad Langlais. The Mavs outshot the Gems 14-9 in the period.
John-Scott Dickson tied the game at the 15:49 mark of the second period. Dale Mahovsky collected the assist on the goal. With Dickson's goal, it was the just the fourth goal by the Mavericks in their last 121 shots. The Mavs dominated the period, racking up 16 shots on goal.
The Mavs broke the 1-1 tie with five minutes to go in regulation, as Dickson registered his second goal of the night, this time on the power play. Nathan O'Nabigon and Dustin Friesen assisted on the goal. The Mavs held off the Gems and skated to their first home victory in four games.
Brian Mahoney-Wilson was stellar in his debut for the Mavericks, making 27 saves on 28 shots by Dayton. With the win, the Mavs are one point back of the first place Evansville IceMen in the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference.
The Mavericks now hit the road and head to Moline, Illinois to take on the Quad City Mallards on Friday and then are back home at Independence Events Center to face the Allen Americans on Saturday night. Saturday's game will feature the Mazuma Credit Union "Teddy Bear Toss". All fans attending the game are encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal. After the Mavs' first goal, fans will throw the doll on the ice. All dolls will be donated to local charities. Tickets for all regular season games are on sale via Ticketmaster.
