Gems Look to Sweep Mavs Tonight in Missouri

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Gems kept their winning ways going with a solid 6-3 victory on the road against the Mavericks Friday night, picking up another two points and jumping past the Mavs to tie the Komets for second place in the standings. Both Dayton and Fort Wayne enter Saturday night only one point out of first, trailing only Evansville for the top spot in the conference.

For the Gems (8-5-4), tonight's meeting with the "Mavs" concludes a challenging three-in-three series, which began on Thursday night in Dayton. This is the second three game series against the same club this season for the Gems, with the IceMen sweeping Dayton in three straight back in November.

Game Day In Missouri

With the win on Saturday night, the Gems overtook the Mavericks in the Turner Conference standings, and are now one point out of first place skating into tonight's series conclusion.

Special Teams Key

Dayton's powerplay would once again be a headline last night, with the Gems capitalizing on two quick man advantage goals in the first period while the penalty kill held the Mavericks scoreless in their four powerplay chances.Dayton finished the game 2 for 5 on the man advantage while Missouri went 0 for 4.

The Offensive Machine

Dayton's high charged line of Damian Surma, Brett Lutes and Matt Larke combined for a whopping eleven points in the 6-3 win, with Lutes scoring twice while Surma and Larke each netted one goal to go along with their plethora of assists in the effort.

Solid Between The Pipes

Goaltending by Larry Sterling was key late in the game, as the Mavs turned up the heat in the third to eventually edge the Gems in total shots on goal 51 to 32, with Sterling turning aside and impressive 48 saves for his third win this season as a Gem.

Movin' On Up

The win on the road on Friday night improved the Gems record while away from Hara Arena to 5-2-2, and the powerplay improves to 21.9% (ranked 9th) heading into Saturday night.
