Sundogs Come Back for Shootout Win Over Bees, 3-2

HIDALGO, TX - Samson Mahbod's power play goal with four minutes to play in the third period knotted the game, and Shawn Morton-Boutin's fourth round shootout goal was the game-winner as the Arizona Sundogs came back from a 2-0 deficit on Saturday night to top the Rio Grande Killer Bees by a 3-2 final at State Farm Arena.
It was the second time this season Morton-Boutin talled a game-winning goal via the shootout. The Sundogs (8-9-3) beat Tulsa 7-6 in a shootout on November 22nd. Morton-Boutin's goal came in the fourth round of the shootout. Arizona's Scott Reid stopped Brandon Campos for the Bees (10-6-1) in round five.
Mahbod's power play strike came on a slap shot from the top of the right circle that beat a screened Wylie Rogers for his second goal of the season with 4:06 to play. Kyle Hood and Morton-Boutin recorded the assists.
Scott Reid earned his sixth win of the season for Arizona after entering the game midway through the opening period for starter Levente Szuper. Reid finished with 23 saves.
Reid Edmondson scored the first period's only goal to give the Bees a 1-0 lead just 1:44 into the contest.
Both teams traded goals in period two as Dan Gendur scored for the second straight night to make it 2-0 for Rio Grande Valley. Adam Smyth cut into the deficit for the Sundogs with an unassisted breakaway goal at 8:29 for his second of the year.
Rogers took the loss for the Bees after stopping 32 shots.
Arizona went 1-for-6 on the power play while the Bees were 0-for-2.
The win keeps Arizona tied with the Texas Brahmas for fifth place in the CHL's Berry Conference. The Sundogs have now won five of their last seven games to pull back to within one game of the .500-mark.
The Sundogs now venture north to wrap up their road trip with a pair of games against the Rapid City Rush next weekend. Friday's contest is scheduled for a 7:05 PM MST start.
