Mavs Clinch Playoff Berth
September 2, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
What should have been a celebratory night after a Lancaster loss put the Mavs in the playoffs turned into a complete disaster. The Mavs wasted an 8-2 lead as the Quakes scored the final seven runs of the game and won 9-8 Wednesday night at the Epicenter.
Three batters into the game the Mavs led 3-0 on a three-run homer by Kyle Seager.
Rancho's Mike Trout led off the bottom of the inning with a homer of his own to get the Quakes on the board.
Shaver Hansen hit a sac fly in the second to add to the lead. Two more followed in the third on an RBI double by Kuo Hui Lo and another RBI by Trevor Coleman to make it 6-1.
Gabe Jacobo lifted a sac fly in the bottom of the inning to cut into the lead.
The Mavs seemed to get a tight grip on the game with two in the fifth. Hansen knocked an RBI single, and Luis Nunez collected an RBI on a fielder's choice to make it 8-2.
The comeback started in the bottom of the fifth. Dillon Baird ripped an RBI double, and a passed ball brought home another to make it 8-4.
Angel Castillo hit a two-run homer in the seventh, and all of a sudden, the Quakes were within two.
Trout collected an RBI single in the eighth, and went to second on the throw home to put the tying run in scoring position with one out.
Daniel Cooper came in and made sure Trout didn't score to keep the Mavs in the lead.
However, Cooper wasn't as fortunate in the ninth. He surrendered a game-tying homer to Jacobo to start the inning.
Castillo then reached on an error by Edilio Colina. Richard Cates followed with a single to put runners at the corners.
The Mavs intentionally walked Eric Oliver to set up the force at home. Cooper struck out Kevin Ramos and Darwin Perez to get the first two outs.
Cooper (1-1) lost the strike zone with Trout at the plate, walking him on four pitches to bring the tying run home.
The Mavs bats were silenced after the fifth. They had one baserunner and no hits. Michael Piazza and Matt Meyer (1-0) combined to throw 4.1 hitless innings to keep the Quakes close. They retired the last 10 straight hitters as well.
Despite clinching a playoff berth, the Mavs are now two games behind the Quakes and are in danger of being swept Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
