Quakes Clinch Playoff Spot, Then Rally for 9-8 Win
September 2, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Wednesday night was a special night for the Quakes, as they punched their ticket to the Cal League Playoffs for the second time in as many seasons.
With Lancaster's 6-2 loss to Lake Elsinore, the Quakes secured their playoff berth, then proceeded to rally from a six-run deficit to defeat the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 9-8 at The Epicenter.
Mike Trout, who opened the game in the bottom of the first with a solo homer, ended the game in the bottom of the ninth, by taking a four-pitch walk to force in the game-winning run.
Trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Gabe Jacobo, who blasted a grand slam in the series-opener on Tuesday, smacked a game-tying homer off of Mavs' reliever Daniel Cooper, tying the game at 8-8. The homer for Jacobo was his team-leading 21st of the year. Angel Castillo followed with a grounder to shortstop Edilio Colina, who mishandled the ball, allowing the winning run to reach first base. Richard Cates followed with a single to right field, chasing Castillo to third. An intentional walk to Eric Oliver loaded the bases for Kevin Ramos. Cooper (1-1) came back to fan Ramos though and then struck out pinch-hitter Darwin Perez. Mike Trout never saw a strike though, as he capped a three-RBI night with the bases-loaded walk to end the game.
The Mavs roughed up Quakes' starter Orangel Arenas on Wednesday, as Kyle Seager's three-run homer had the Mavs in front 3-0, just three batters into the game.
The two teams traded runs over the next few innings, but the Mavs eventually built an 8-2 advantage and chased Arenas in the fifth.
The Quakes got two back in the fifth, as Dillon Baird knocked in a run with an RBI double, then scored on a passed ball to make it 8-4 against Mavs' starter Jon Hesketh.
Castillo ripped a two-run homer in the seventh, his 20th of the year, against Bobby LaFromboise, making it an 8-6 game.
The Quakes pulled to within one in the eighth, as Trout's RBI single plated Ramos to make it a one-run game.
Quakes' reliever Matt Meyer (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for his first win.
With just five games to go, the Quakes (36-29) now lead the Mavs (34-31) by two games for the Second Half South Division Title. Rancho Cucamonga looks for the sweep on Thursday, in the final home game of the regular season at The Epicenter. Ryan Chaffee (7-6) takes on Kenn Kasparek (9-5) in the series-finale at 7:05pm.
