Mavs Battle Back for Win

September 2, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

One night after letting a large lead slip away, it seemed Mavs were rattled and might be destined for another loss Thursday night in Rancho Cucamonga. Trailing 3-0 heading into the seventh, the Mavs showed some resiliency and urgency, battling back to win 4-3 over the Quakes.

After being held to just three hits through six innings, the Mavs collected two hits and a run on just two pitches in the seventh. Kyle Seager doubled on the first pitch of the inning, and Johermyn Chavez immediately followed with an RBI single.

Trevor Coleman drew a lead off walk to start the eighth. Shaver Hansen then ripped one to the right-center field gap. Coleman stumbled around third base and had to retreat. What appeared to be an RBI triple turned into a double with runners at second and third instead.

Edilio Colina followed with a sac fly to make it 3-2. The Quakes lifted starting pitcher Ryan Chaffee and brought in reliever Jose Perez.

Perez got Luis Nunez to pop out, but Seager came through with a two-out RBI single to tie the game.

After a bloop single to start the bottom of the eighth, the Quakes had the go-ahead run at second with one out. Stephen Penney replaced Kenn Kasparek and got Dillon Baird and Gabe Jacobo to each fly out.

The Mavs had none on and two out in the ninth. Denny Almonte lined an 0-2 pitch from Perez (1-2) for a double, and Coleman followed with another double to give the Mavs their first lead of the night.

Penney (5-3) worked a quick 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the win.

While Chaffee was shutting down the Mavs through the first six innings, Baird was taking care of all the offense for the Quakes.

He lined an RBI single in the first, hit a sac fly in the third, and then hit a solo homer in the sixth to plate all three runs.

Outside of Baird, Kasparek pitched well like he always does against Rancho Cucamonga. He allowed three runs and five hits with one walk and four strikeouts over 7.1 innings.

It was a tough no decision for Chaffee, who saw a streak of 17 straight scoreless come to an end in the seventh. He allowed three runs and six hits over season-high 7.1 innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

With the win, the Mavs are back within one game of first place with four to go. They'll start their final regular season series in Lake Elsinore Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
