Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
The High Desert Mavericks turned the tables on the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Thursday night at The Epicenter. One night after giving away a six-run lead, the Mavericks rallied from a three-run seventh-inning deficit, downing the Quakes by a score of 4-3.
Trevor Coleman's two-out double in the ninth inning gave High Desert their first lead of the game, as the Mavs held on and pulled to within one game of the Quakes in the South Division, with just four to go in the regular season.
Leading 3-0 in the seventh, starter Ryan Chaffee gave up back-to-back hits, with Johermyn Chavez driving in Kyle Seager with an RBI single, putting the Mavs on the board at 3-1.
Chaffee walked Coleman to open the eighth, his only walk of the night. Shaver Hansen followed with a double to right-center field, putting the tying runs in scoring position. Edilio Colina's sac fly brought the Mavs to within a run at 3-2, as Coleman scored from third. Quakes' reliever Jose Perez then came out of the bullpen, getting Luis Nunez to pop up for the second out. But Seager delivered the game-tying hit off of Perez, grounding a single to right to score Hansen to even the game at 3-3.
Perez (1-2) got the first two outs of the ninth, but surrendered a double to Denny Almonte, followed by the eventual game-winning hit, as Coleman doubled to right-center to put High Desert ahead to stay.
Mavs' reliever Stephen Penney (5-3), who got the final two outs of the eighth, worked a 1-2-3 ninth to hold on for the win.
Dillon Baird drove in all three Rancho Cucamonga runs on Thursday night. An RBI single plated Darwin Perez in the first for a 1-0 lead. Baird's sac fly scored Mike Trout in the third, putting the Quakes up 2-0. He capped his evening with a solo shot to right field in the sixth, taking Mavs' starter Kenn Kasparek deep for his 13th homer of the year and a 3-0 lead.
The Quakes (36-30), now just one game ahead of the Mavericks (35-31) will try to regroup on Friday, as they open the final four games of the regular season at The Hangar in Lancaster. Kyle Hurst (4-3) will go in the series-opener, taking on Ross Seaton (6-12) of the JetHawks. First pitch on Friday night from the Hanger is 7:00pm.
Your Rancho Cucamonga Quakes have clinched a playoff berth for the upcoming California League Playoffs. Playoff Ticket packages will be available online at rcquakes.com, over the phone at (909-481-5000) and in person at The Epicenter ticket office.
