San Jose Giants News Release

Inland Empire used a 19-hit offensive barrage and took advantage of San Jose's season-high four errors to earn a 10-5 victory over the Giants on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. The 66ers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings and worked out of bases loaded jams in three out of the last five frames to even the series at a game apiece. The loss drops San Jose's record to 72-63 - one game ahead of the Stockton Ports (71-64) and Visalia Rawhide (71-64) for the top overall mark in the North Division. Five games remain in the regular season.

San Francisco Giant Chris Ray made the start on the mound for San Jose as part of a rehabilitation assignment. Ray struggled as the right- hander was tagged for seven hits and four runs (two earned) over 1 2/3 innings of work. He struck out one, walked none and suffered the loss.

The 19 hits allowed by the Giants pitching staff were the most in a single game this season. All nine 66ers starters recorded at least one hit with leadoff batter Alfredo Silverio (4-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI) leading the charge.

Francisco Peguero (3-for-5, RBI) extended his hitting streak to 15 games while Juan Perez (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) blasted his 12th home run of the season to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Michael Sandoval (2-for-4) also finished with two hits while Matt Klimas (1-for-3, 2 RBI) drove home a pair of runs.

Inland Empire scored two unearned runs against Ray in the top of the first inning as Silverio lined the first pitch of the game into the left field corner for a double. With Ramon Jean at the plate, the catcher Klimas dropped a bunt attempt in foul territory for an error before a single to right put runners on first and third. Austin Gallagher followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 and after Ray's wild pick-off throw moved Jean to third, Gabriel Gutierrez delivered a two-out, RBI single for the second run of the frame.

The 66ers kept the pressure on with three more runs in the top of the second. All seven batters in the inning reached base safely (six hits and one walk) against Ray and Jorge Bucardo, but Inland Empire had three runners thrown out at third base. Chris Gutierrez led off with a single, but was thrown out at third by Perez in center field when Johan Garcia singled. Bryant Hernandez followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0 and then Silverio doubled home another run for a 4-0 advantage. Silverio was thrown out at third on the play by left fielder James Simmons attempting to stretch the hit into a triple.

Bucardo was then summoned from the bullpen and after yielding a single to Jean and issuing a walk to Gallagher, he allowed an RBI single to Perez for a 5-0 Inland Empire lead. However, Gallagher was thrown out at third to end the inning.

The Giants cut into the 66ers advantage in the bottom of the second as Klimas stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and came through with a two-run single into right field. Peguero followed with an RBI infield single to bring San Jose to within 5-3.

Bucardo didn't allow a hit over the next two innings, but Inland Empire scored three times in the top of the fifth to move back in front by five runs. Consecutive singles from Gallagher and Perez started the frame before Gabriel Gutierrez reached on an infield single to load the bases. On the play, shortstop Jose Flores threw the ball to second in an attempt to force out Perez, however Charlie Culberson dropped the ball as Gallagher raced home via the error. Steven Caseres plated the second run with a sacrifice fly while Gutierrez eventually scored on a two-out wild pitch to make it 8-3.

Perez brought San Jose back to within 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth with a towering two-run homer to deep left center field. The Giants then loaded the bases with two outs on singles from Flores and Simmons and a walk to Drew Biery, however 66ers starting pitcher Aaron Miller induced Wendell Fairley to fly out to left field.

Miller (6-4), a former supplemental first round draft pick, was credited with the victory after tossing five innings and allowing five runs (all earned) on nine hits. The left-hander walked one and struck out five.

Inland Empire added single runs in the sixth and ninth innings to extend their lead. In the top of the sixth, Hernandez led off by reaching on a Biery throwing error and scored two batters later when Jean bounced into a double play. Then in the ninth against Jason Stoffel, Silverio connected for his fourth hit of the evening - a one- out RBI single - to make it 10-5.

Trailing by four runs, the Giants threatened in the bottom of the eighth as they loaded the bases with one out against reliever Robert Boothe. Biery led off by drawing a walk before Klimas walked with one out. Peguero then bounced a single into right field to put a third runner on, but Perez followed by grounding into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.

Needing five runs in the bottom of the ninth, San Jose again loaded the bases as Flores and Sandoval each walked to begin the frame before Charlie Culberson blooped a single into shallow right center. However, Matt Sartor struck out the next two hitters, Simmons and Biery, before Fairley flied out to shallow center. The Giants left nine runners on base over the last five innings.
