Kansas City Mavericks News Release
WICHITA, Kansas - The Missouri Mavericks ended their three-game winless streak Friday night with a convincing 4-1 win over the Wichita Thunder at Intrust Bank Arena. Jeff Christian finished with a pair of goals and goaltender Charlie Effinger stopped 25 of 26 shots in his first start with the Mavericks. Missouri (21-22-4) never trailed in the game and improved to 8-0-0 against the Thunder (7-34-3) this season. The Mavericks will head home for their third game in three nights Saturday night to take on the Mississippi RiverKings. Tickets are limited but can be purchased by calling (866) 443-8849 or visiting the Independence Events Center Box Office.
For the second straight night, Jordan Foreman scored the first goal of the game for the Mavericks. He unlocked the scoreless tie at the 17:24 mark on an unassisted effort and gave Missouri the 1-0 lead through one period. Wichita held the edge in shots 12-10 in the opening stanza, but didn't convert on either of two chances on the power play.
Jeff Christian extended the Mavericks lead to 2-0 at the 5:56 mark when he one-timed a Jeff MacDermid pass into the back of the net. Simon Watson earned the second assist on the eventual game-winning goal. It was a five-on-three power play tally for Missouri marking the fifth time in six games that the Mavericks have scored on the power play. After two periods, Missouri held a 2-0 lead and 22-19 edge in shots.
The Thunder cut the lead in half on Neil Clark's fifth goal of the season and second in as many games in a Thunder uniform, but it was as close as the Thunder would get. Karl Sellan scored less than three minutes later marking his first goal since returning to the Mavericks lineup after a six-week stint on the injured reserve. Finally, Christian scored his second of the game at the 16:33 mark of the final period on assists from Mike Burgoyne and Tom Maldonado.
The action wasn't finished as the teams dropped the gloves in the final minute of play in what was close to a line brawl. Effinger, in his first game with the Mavericks, became the first goaltender in Missouri history to get in a fight when he went toe-to-toe with Wichita goaltender Ian Keserich.
Missouri finished 1-10 on the power play and killed five of six power plays for Wichita. The Mavericks rattled off 41 shots marking the fourth straight game in which the team has had 39 or more shots.
Missouri will return home to take on the Mississippi RiverKings Saturday night at Independence Events Center. Limited tickets are available by calling (866) 443-8849 or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
