Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder lost 4-1 to the Missouri Mavericks at the INTRUST Bank Arena on Friday night. Jeff Christian scored two goals for Missouri, but Thunder goaltender Ian Keserich helped energize the crowd late in the game when he fought Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger.
Missouri took a 1-0 lead late in the first period on an unassisted goal from Jordan Foreman at 17:24. Foreman started the play after a turnover near his own blue line and was initially denied by Keserich on a shot from the left faceoff circle. Foreman got to his own rebound though, and took an extra step to the net before backhanding the puck behind Keserich. Effinger made a key save on a one-timer from Anders Strome early in the period to keep Wichita off the board.
The Mavericks took advantage of a series of penalties charged to the Thunder in the second to open a 2-0 lead. Shortly after Chris McAllister was given a double minor, referee TJ Nua called a hooking penalty on Joel Hanson that provided the Mavericks with a full two minutes of five-on-three. Jeff MacDermid made a cross-crease pass that Jeff Christian banged in to the left of Keserich at 5:56 for the power play goal.
Wichita pulled within one at 3:51 in the third on a power play goal from Neil Clark. Clark grabbed a pass from Paul Kelly near the crease and jammed it under the crossbar, giving him four points in two games with the Thunder. Missouri re-gained a two-goal advantage at 6:45 when Karl Sellan nailed a shot from the outside into the left corner of the net. The Mavericks scored again at 16:33 on another backdoor tip from Jeff Christian.
With 34.8 seconds left in the game, Neil Clark led a scrum in front of the Mavericks' net that eventually led to Tomas Klempa and Brett Beauchamp also grabbing partners. Keserich dropped his equipment from 200 feet away and took on a reluctant Effinger. Though Effinger was able to pull Keserich's sweater off, the Thunder goaltender landed several rights before taking Effinger to the ice.
Keserich finished 37 of 41 in the loss, while Effinger saved 25 of 26 in the win. The Thunder was 1 for 6 on the power play. Missouri went 1 for 8. Paul Kelly extended his point streak to five games.
The Thunder wraps up their three-game homestand on Saturday against the Arizona Sundogs at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL.
