Allen Americans News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - In a see-saw matchup with the Gorillas, the Americans return victorious, defeating the Gorillas 6-5 in overtime. The win brings Allen's record to 33-10-3 (69 points).
The game started off slowly with a goal and fight in the first period. Amarillo took the first lead of the game at 4:31 when Gordon Bell scored off of a rebound. Later in the frame, rookie Tobias Whelan got in a bout with Gorilla Chris Cloud.
With four combined goals in the second, the Americans never took the lead in the period. Nathan O'Nabigon tied the score 1-1 at 5:39 of the second off of a great pass from Erik Adams. Then, Allen gave up a goal to Joe Guenther on an odd-man rush 1:23 later, which gave the Gorillas a 2-1 advantage. The Americans did not give up, though, and Whelan scored a backhanded tally to even the score again. Amarillo's David Nimmo lit the lamp with 6:17 left in the period to give the Gorillas another one-goal lead. The game was 3-2 in favor of the Gorillas after two periods.
After 6:15 in the third period, Allen's newcomer, Matt Radoslovich, scored his first goal in an Americans uniform to tie the game at three goals. 2010 CHL All-Star Bruce Graham then gave the club its first lead of the game, but Amarillo evened the score less than one minute later off a one-timer from Jake Morissette. The Gorillas took the lead again with seven minutes left to play in regulation when Jake Obermeyer scored. The Americans refused to let the game slip away, and Colton Yellow Horn tied it on the power play with a little over two minutes remaining in the third.
Allen captain Jarret Lukin scored the game-winning goal at 1:36 of overtime to give the Americans the extra point. It was his tenth goal of the season.
Whelan, not known for dropping the gloves, became the first American in club history to record a Gordie Howe hat trick, which consists of a fight, goal and assist in the same night. Whelan received five for fighting in the first period, notched a goal in the second and had three helpers in the game.
Matt Radoslovich notched his first point in an Americans uniform tonight when he assisted Whelan's goal.
Americans netminder Chris Whitley made 29 saves tonight and earned his ninth win in a row.
The Americans travel to North Richland Hills tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. to play cross-town rival Texas in their third game in three nights. Allen rests Sunday but gets back in the action with a home contest Monday afternoon against the Brahmas.
