Mavericks Split Weekend Series with 3-2 Victory in Rapid CIty

November 17, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks fought back in Rapid City on Saturday night to prove their undefeated start was no fluke. The Mavericks snatched the first two points of the season away from the Rush with a 3-2 victory, preventing the team from breaking the Central Hockey League record for longest undefeated streak.

The Mavericks took control of their second encounter with the Rush early in the first period with a goal from Colt King off a rebound. Momentum clearly in Missouri's hands, Sebastien Thinel doubled the Mavericks efforts with a breakaway goal at the end of the first twenty minutes of play.

The game remained in the Mavericks control entering the second period, fighting through three penalty killing situations and still notching another point on the scoreboard with a power play goal by Colt King.

However the Rush were an undefeated team for a reason, and just as they managed on Friday night against the Mavericks, Rapid City found their way back into the game with two goals in the third period. Only one goal separating the two powerful teams, tensions on the ice were on the rise, and plenty of penalties were handed out in the final minutes of play, leaving the Mavericks short-handed in the final minutes of regulation.

Ultimately it was the strong team effort and patience of the Mavericks that secured the victory in Rapid City. Shane Owen was brilliant in goal and made 44 saves on Saturday night.

Dave Pszenyczny, suspended for 3 games for a hit to the head on a Rush player Friday night, will return to the ice for the Mavericks on November 23, against the St. Charles Chill; the Mavericks will be one player short on their bench for the next two games until then.

The Mavericks return home on November 22nd to face the St. Charles Chill in their second game of the Show Me Cup series. With season tickets starting at just over $11 per game and FREE parking, the Mavericks are the pinnacle of family affordable entertainment.
