Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS - Despite a second-period rally, Wichita (2-8-4) came up short on Saturday night falling 3-2 in overtime to the Tulsa Oilers (6-6-2) at INTRUST Bank Arena. Former Thunder defenseman Jarred Mohr scored the game-winner 45 seconds into the extra session. Jesse Dudas led the way for the Thunder, recording two points on the night. The Oilers take a 3-1 lead in the StoneWolf Casino Cup series after winning both games in Wichita. The two teams will not see each other until the beginning of December and have 10 more meetings this season.
It didn't take long for tempers to flare as the gloves were off just 13 seconds into the first period with Jason Wilson and Kyle Bochek scrapping. The two teams traded early power plays and Tulsa was able to capitalize on its second of the game with a goal from Brandon Coccimiglio at 9:19. Coccimiglio redirected a shot from the blue line for his seventh of the season and fifth tally against the Thunder. At 15:19, Todd Robinson appeared to play the puck with a high stick at the red line, but play was allowed to continue as he found Michel Beausoleil in front of Torrie Jung and made it a 2-0 contest after the first 20 minutes.
Wichita turned it up a notch in the second out-shooting Tulsa 18-10. The Oilers took a few untimely penalties and allowed the Thunder to get back in the game. Jon Booras scored his first of the season at 16:27 putting home a rebound from the right circle to get Wichita started. Todd Robinson then took a late slashing minor and allowed the Thunder power play unit to have another try. With just 0.3 seconds on the clock, Dudas hammered home a slap shot from the blue line tying the game at two heading into the second intermission.
Both teams traded scoring chances in the final 20 minutes with the two netminders shining in key situations. The best opportunity came when Wichita's Matt Robinson got to a loose puck between the circles and was denied on a mini break-a-way by Shane Madolora. The final horn sounded and for the first time this season, Wichita and Tulsa needed extra time in a game that would be decided by a goal.
The Oilers got the game-winner early in the extra period when Todd Robinson got behind a defender, fed a pass to the left post finding Mohr who put it in for the 3-2 victory. Mohr spent the past two seasons in Wichita and was activated to the line-up earlier in the day after sitting on the 14-Day IR.
Wichita falls to 1-3-4 in one-goal games and is still looking for its first win on home-ice this season. Dudas finished with a goal and an assist. Andrew Martens recorded an assist and is just four away from 100 helpers in a Thunder uniform. Jung took the overtime loss, stopping 29 of 32 shots. Madolora got the victory, stopping 30 of 32 shots he faced.
Wichita went 2-for-5 on the power play while Tulsa was 1-for-5.
