Kansas City Mavericks News Release
ALLEN, Texas - The Missouri Mavericks fell for the fourth consecutive game on Wednesday night in a 4-1 loss to the Allen Americans. The defeat was Missouri's first in regulation on the road since November 22 and dropped its record to 8-10-3 on the season.
When Missouri and Allen met in Independence on November 30, goals were hard to come by for both teams in Allen's 1-0 win. The first period of tonight's game was eerily similar as the teams battled to a scoreless draw through 20 minutes. Ville Husso made his first start in goal this season against Allen and was sharp early with saves on each of the 14 shots that he faced. Riley Gill, who made 24 saves in the shutout win against Missouri last Wednesday, was equal to the task at the other end with nine first-period saves.
Much of the second period was played on special teams as the Mavericks had a pair of power play chances and the Americans were awarded three. On Allen's second advantage of the frame the Mavericks looked to have a chance on a shorthanded rush but Shawn Pauly's centering pass missed Dan Correale and the Americans raced off the other way with numbers. Their counter attack proved successful as Spencer Asuchak beat Husso from the slot with 11:31 gone by in the period. The Mavericks nearly tied the game late in the second when Dane Fox sent Darren Nowick in alone on a shorthanded breakaway. Nowick's shot, though, clanged off the post to the left of Gill and the Americans took the one-goal lead into the third period.
In each of their last two games the Mavericks produced offensive outbursts at the start of the third period, and netted three goals within the first six minutes of play both times. Tonight, however, Allen buyoed it's advantage with a marker 37 seconds in. Derek Mathers collected a rebound low on the right wing and lifted a shot across the goal line from a sharp angle. Radoslav Illo scored for the third time in as many games in Allen when he jammed home a power play goal at 9:35. But that tally was sandwiched between two goals scored by the Americans off of Mavericks turnovers. Gary Steffes notched his at 8:55 followed by Chad Costello at 9:56, which set the final score.
Husso shouldered the loss in a 35-save effort. The Mavericks went 1-for-7 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendar! The Mavericks return home on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7:05 p.m. to face the Tulsa Oilers.
