Game Recap: Shattock's Shootout Winner Earns Vital Road Win for Wings

December 7, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

MOLINE, IL- The Kalamazoo Wings used stellar special teams and got a second-round shootout winner from Tyler Shattock on the way to a 3-2 victory over the Quad City Mallards on Wednesday at iWireless Center.

After killing off two consecutive penalties to start the game, Kalamazoo settled down as the period progressed, and jumped out to a first-period lead. After regrouping in the neutral zone, Eric Kattelus raced the puck up the left-wing boards and zipped a shot through the legs of Quad City goalie Adam Vay to lift the Wings to a 1-0 edge.

The Mallards roared back less than five minutes later and tied the game with under four minutes remaining in the opening frame. Dylan Labbe wired a corner-seeking wrist shot through traffic, beating Joel Martin over the glove.

Early in the second period and on their first power play of the game, Kalamazoo used a series of crafty passes to regain the lead. Tanner Sorenson faked a slap shot and slid the puck to Shattock on the back door, who calmly slid the puck through the crease to a wide-open Justin Taylor who pocketed his team-leading eighth of the season.

Carrying the one-goal lead into the final minutes of the third period, Kalamazoo were hemmed back in their own end by the Mallards, and Quad City leveled with less than four minutes remaining. In similar fashion to his first, Labbe blasted a shot through a sea of bodies that eluded Martin and eventually sent the game to overtime.

The extra session was loaded with back-and-forth chances, including a power play try for Quad City. Kalamazoo buckled down on the back end and kept out all of the Mallards' chances in the waning moments, forcing the decision to be made in a shootout.

In the shootout, Martin made stops on Nolan LaPorte and Alex Petan before Shattock's second-round conversion for Kalamazoo put the game on the stick of Sam Warning. Warning's quick wrist shot was kept out by Martin, sealing a 3-2 victory for Kalamazoo.
