Kansas City Mavericks News Release
DAYTON, Ohio - Missouri Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa stopped a season-high 38 of 40 shots, but it wasn't enough as the visiting Mavericks lost, 2-1, to the Dayton Gems Monday afternoon at Hara Arena. Forward Mike Berry scored the lone goal for the Mavericks (19-13-3) who have now lost five of their last seven games. Matthew Larke and Mike Vaskivuo earned the goals for the Gems (18-14-3), and goaltender Jeff Jakaitis stopped 26 of 27 shots in the win.
After a scoreless first period, the Mavericks and Gems traded goals in the second. Larke scored at the 6:57 mark of the middle period on assists from Greg Labenski and Jonathan Ornelas. The Mavericks bounced back to tie the game when Berry notched his ninth goal of the season at the 10:27 mark. He was assisted by Bill Vandermeer and Mike Wakita, but that proved to be all the offense for the Mavericks.
Vaskivuo's goal at the 3:17 mark of the third period was the difference in the game as the Mavericks were not able to tie it in the final 17 minutes.
Missouri's penalty killing unit was strong again by stopping all six of the Gems chances; however the struggling power play unit was also unable to light the lamp. Missouri finished 0-for-3 on the power play, and the Mavericks have not registered a power play goal in their last five games which is tied for the longest such streak this season.
The Mavericks stay on the road for a Wednesday tilt against the Fort Wayne Komets. The Mavs will return home this Friday night, January 21 for a border showdown with rival Wichita Thunder before wrapping up the week by visiting the Thunder in Wichita on Saturday night. Tickets are available at the Independence Events Center Box Office, by calling (800) 745-3000 or visiting www.TicketMaster.com . Visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
