
Special Teams Lead Americans Over Sundogs 4-3

The first place Allen Americans claimed their third straight victory this afternoon, downing the Arizona Sundogs 4-3 in front of 4,137 on Kid's Day at the Allen Event Center. The win advances Allen's record to 27-7-1 (55 points).
The Americans opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal 9:27 into the first period when Dave Bonk blasted Erik Adam's cross-ice feed past Sundogs netminder Levente Szuper. The goal was Bonk's fourteenth of the season and sixth in the past eight games.
Arizona's Billy Bezeau knotted the score at 1 with 6:41 remaining in the period, but the Americans would surge back ahead 0:47 later on the power play when Colton Yellow Horn's one-timer from the circle beat Szuper. Tobias Whelan and Justin DaCosta were credited with the assists on the play.
Chris Whitley, who was between the pipes for the third straight game since returning from injury, finished the opening period with 13 saves on 14 shots.
The second period saw the Americans extend their lead behind a pair of early power play goals. Liam Huculak's wrister found the back of the net just 0:07 into the period to put the Americans on top 3-1, followed by Nino Musitelli's shot through traffic that beat Szuper 6:22 later to give the Americans a 4-1 lead. Musitelli's tally was his team leading twentieth of the season.
Sundogs forward Cam Keith would cut into the Americans lead with a power play goal at the the 16:19 mark of the frame, but several late saves by Whitley kept the Sundogs from inching any closer and the Americans two goal lead in-tact through forty minutes of play.
Joey Sides scored with 0:36 remaining in regulation to trim the Americans lead to 4-3, but the Sundogs would be unable to mount any further attacks in the Americans zone.
Colton Yellow Horn led all skaters with 3 points (1g, 2a) and was named the game's first star.
The Americans will now hit the road for a pair of games in Rio Grande Valley against the Killer Bees next Friday and Saturday. Both games start at 7:30 PM and can be heard on www.allenamericans.com .
