MOLINE, Illinois - Goaltender Charlie Effinger stopped 43 of 44 shots and the Missouri Mavericks defeated Quad City Mallards, 2-1, Saturday night at i wireless Center. Ed McGrane scored the game-winning goal for the Mavericks as they ended a five-game winless streak and improved to 8-5-2 on the season. "The team made the six-hour trip to Moline on the game day for the first time, and I am proud of them and the strong team effort," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "Everyone did what they needed to do and worked hard tonight; hopefully they will relax now and get ready for a big week against Dayton."
The teams each had two power play opportunities through the first 15 minutes of the opening period and despite no scoring, each team had a few quality scoring chances. Jake Riddle unlocked the scoreless tie at the 16:08 mark of the first period on the Mallards' third power play opportunity of the game. Former Maverick defenseman Jared Lavender's shot was wide of the net, but the puck was shuffled to Riddle who buried it just before the net came off its moorings. The Mallards took the 1-0 lead into the intermission although the Mavericks had the edge in shots at 13-8.
The Mavericks answered just past the midway point of the second period on Dale Mahovsky's ninth goal of the season. Nathan O'Nabigon made a centering pass off his backhand to Mahovsky and he tied the game at the 11:10 mark. John-Scott Dickson earned the second assist on the play. Missouri picked up the only two penalties in the second period, but the penalty kill unit stood strong in net and killed both penalties.
Ed McGrane scored the game-winning goal at the 5:48 mark of the third period for his fifth goal of the season and second game winner. Mavs' forward Andrew Courtney centered his pass from the corner and McGrane redirected the puck over the shoulder of Mallards' goaltender David McKee. Effinger made a handful a big saves for the remainder of the third period including a penalty shot for Mallards' forward Brandon Marino. Effinger finished with 43 saves on 44 shots for his sixth win of the season.
Missouri was 0 for 5 on the power play and the Mallards finished 1 for 5. The Mavericks ended their five-game winless streak and improved to 8-5-2 on the season.
