Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks edged the Brampton Beast 5-4 in the shootout on Friday night, capturing their second win in a row over the Beast on the road to extend their win streak to 7 games.
Goaltender Erno Suomalainen started in goal for the Mavericks, but the Brampton Beast capitalized with 2 goals in the first frame to lead the Mavs 2-0 heading into the second period. Frank LittleJohn and Andrew Fournier were credited with the lamp-lighters for the Beast.
The Mavericks made their comeback at the start of the second period, with an unassisted goal from Eric Castonguay at the 2:35 mark of the period, followed by the equalizer goal via defenseman Dave Pszenyczny at 5:22. The Mavs would hold on to the tie game until Andrew Fournier tallied his second goal of the evening to take a 3-2 lead for the Beast.
Missouri took its stand in the third period, as Dave Pszenyczny and Eric Castonguay each netted their second goals of the game. First Pszenyczny scored only 22 seconds into the period, assisted by Matt Stephenson and Eric Castonguay, then Castonguay followed suit and bumped the Mavericks ahead 4-3 with a power play goal off a pass from Sebastien Thinel.
Just when it looked as if the Mavericks had made the comeback to secure a 1-goal game, Scott Howes, aided on the ice by the extra attacker situation, scored with 27 seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime.
When 5 minutes of 4-on-4 hockey could not decide a winner, the game headed to the shootout, the second shootout in a week for the Mavericks. Team Captain Sebastien Thinel scored on the Mavericks first attempt, and goaltender Shane Owen, who had taken over in goal at the top of the third period, put out a flawless performance to secure the Mavericks 5-4 win.
Sebastien Thinel is only 2 assists away from breaking into second place in All-Time Assists for the Central Hockey League. Thinel captured 3rd place earlier this season.
Missouri remains in Brampton through the weekend as they take on the Beast again on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm CT. The Mavericks return home on Friday, March 21st to the Independence Events Center to face-off against the Quad City Mallards at 7:05pm.
