Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - Despite frigid temperatures outside the arena, the Mavericks were able to turn up the heat and defeat the St. Charles Chill 6-1 on Friday night at the Independence Events Center in front of their fifth sell-out crowd of the season.
The Mavericks and the Chill were scoreless through the first twenty minutes of play. The Mavs controlled a majority of the scoring opportunities, leading shots on goal 14-4 by the end of the period. Missouri was unable to capitalize on two power-play opportunities, and tempers flared as Andrew Courtney was sent to the locker room with a slashing penalty and a game misconduct when he retaliated against Chill forward, Martin Hlinka, who had just delivered a big hit to the Mavs' veteran.
Team Captain, Sebastien Thinel was first to strike for the Mavericks, assisted by Dave Pszenyczny and Trevor Kell. Rob Kleebaum doubled the Mavs' efforts with a big power-play goal, assisted by Anders Franzon.
St. Charles' Kyle O'Kane answered back with a goal to get the Chill on the board, assisted by Andrew Conboy and Martin Hlinka less than a minute after Kleebaum's goal to cut the Mavs' lead in half 2-1.
Obi Adyba took the game into his hands with an unassisted goal to bring the Mavs up to 3-1 over the Chill. Before the second period expired, Evan Vossen was set up for a perfect goal by Trevor Kell and Dave Pszenyczny to take a 4-1 lead.
After a very physical first two periods, the third period settled down, with a defeated Chill team and a Mavericks team with their tempers in check. Obi Aduba opened play in the third with his second goal of the night at the 4:50 mark, assisted by Evan Vossen and Kyle Hood. The dominant team wasn't done putting points up until Eric Castonguay put his name on the tally sheet, assisted by Mike Ramsay and Sebastien Thinel to take the 6-1 victory over a deflated St. Charles team.
The Mavericks play their next game on Saturday night on the road against the Tulsa Oilers. The Mavs will continue on the road with a three back-to-back-to-back games against the league-leading Rapid City Rush.
