Montgomery Biscuits News Release
HOOVER, AL - John Matulia blooped a two-run single down the left field line to break a 4-4 tie, and the Biscuits (18-20) beat the Birmingham Barons (20-17) 6-4 in 11 innings Monday night at Regions Park.
The inning started with an infield single from Shawn O'Malley. He'd move to second on a sac bunt from Tim Beckham, and after Stephen Vogt was walked intentionally, Daniel Mayora contributed an infield single of his own before Matulia dropped his game-winner onto the chalk half-way down the left field line.
Zach Quate (2-1) pitched three perfect innings to get the win with Paul Phillips (1) tossing a perfect 11th to get the save. The pen retired the final 13 Barons hitters.
The Barons twice erased deficits, with the Biscuits going up 3-0 in the third and 4-3 in the fifth. A two-out double from Tyler Kuhn against Neil Schenk in the seventh tied the game, and the Barons would wind up loading the bases against Schenk in that inning but Mayora made back-handed a hard bouncer down the third base line and threw out Justin Greene to end the frame.
The Biscuits had ample opportunities as well, going 4-24 with runners in scoring position and stranding 13 runners on base.
Both starters took no-decisions, with Chris Archer allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings and Birmingham's Matt Zaleski going five and allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks. The loser (0-1) was Tyson Corley.
Vogt led the Biscuits with three hits. Beckham, Mayora, Matulia, and Henry Wrigley all collected two.
RHP Joe Cruz will start for the Biscuits in game four on Tuesday night against Birmingham LHP Justin Edwards at 7:05.
